And, if you're in Washington state and you've lost your ballot (or spilled something on it), you can also request a new one -- and even print it out at home!

EDIT: you can also get replacement ballots in other states (although I think Washington's request-online-and-print-at-home option is relatively rare). Wherever you are, calling your local elections office is a good first step!

Good point -- calling your local election office is a good option in any state, I'll update the post to reflect that.
I don't think there are a lot of other states that let you get a new ballot and print it out at home though. In California you can request to have one mailed to you, some states you actually have to show up in person.

A moderation pattern of making mistakes that impact women of color is *not* *ok*. Neither is the attitude that it's something people should just expect and put up with, or that the burden should be on the people who are affected by it. And since the person who has controlled moderation on that site for the last six years also controls the code base ...

It's true, different people prefer different options. The blog post talks about different ways of getting the replacement ballot and links out to the official list of election offices with phone numbers and addresses.
But many people *do* have access to a printer, and the reason IndiPlus first did a post like this in 2020 was that even experienced activists didn't know about the print-your-own option. And a surprising number of people found it useful!

@Mer__edith@mastodon.world Totally agree. One of the biggest orgnanizing challenges for privacy advocates is that we're very silo'ed. There are effective local coalitions against facial recognition and ShotSpotter, national privacy and civil liberties orgs, state-based groups like we have in Washington, companies like Signal and Mozilla ... we often work together on individual campaigns, but there's no coherent #privacy organizing strategy.
2023 would be a good year to change that!

@tchambers useful, thanks. On Post, I'm surprised you didn't mention their intentioal choice to exclude disabled users initially by not worrying about accessibility. And good choice on the images, almost all white guys, it very effectively conveys the racial disparities here even though you don't mention it in the text!

And, there have been years of "we're working on getting better at moderating," so it's getting taken with a grain of salt.

@geomblog, the Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights got mentioned -- Sen Hasegawa said it would be ideal if it got used as a framework for state regulation moving forward. Which doesn't mean it's going to happen, but still nice to hear.

Chanda similarly said the moderators on the instance she was originally on did a good job -- and none of the abuse came from people on that instance -- but the tools here aren't good enough to insulate people from abuse i the broader fediverse.

Here in WA, ACLU of WA has one funded organizer who splits time between tech issues and others, and a policy manager who has an incredible amount on their plate ... and that's it for funded positions in the entire state, as far as I can tell. Meanwhile the WA Tech Industry Association just added more new lobbyist positions, as well as MS, Amazon, etc etc etc

In Seattle, SolidarityBudget led a coalition that stopped ShotSpotter. How many of these groups and people can we get involved advocating for automated decision systems legislatino at the state level? Federally? What about other members of the national StopShotSpotter coalition? etc etc

Case in point: "Local-only posts", that don't get shared to other instances, are very helpful at reducing abuse for people who are on well-moderated instances (and good from a privacy perspective, too). The glitch fork implemented these in 2017, and the Hometown fork also has them. But Mastodon's BDFL Eugen has rejected them from the mainline code, so they're not available on most sites.

I don't see anything there that would be grounds for silencing. Just because somebody claims that something is antisemitic doesn't make it antisemitic. Jews in general agree that holocaust *denial* is antisemitic, but I don't see that in any of these posts.

But they are not the celebs, so maybe I should have said "medium-porofile" 🙂
