And there it is, the lead sponsor of the Kids Online Safety Act saying the quiet part out loud: she wants to use #KOSA to "protect minor children from the #transgender in this culture" https://www.nbcnews.com/nbc-out/out-politics-and-policy/senator-appears-suggest-bipartisan-bill-will-censor-transgender-conten-rcna103479

So Elon Musk’s birdsite officially has the most restrictive speech policies that the bird site has ever had in its entire history https://www.mediaite.com/tech/twitter-blocks-mediaite-post-critical-of-elon-musk/

Here's @team@mastodon.fightforthefuture.org statement on this:
We call for #MadisonSquareGarden to immediately end all use of #facialrecognition and #biometric #surveillance tech.
And we call on lawmakers to enact a ban on all use of facial recognition in places of public accommodation, as defined by the ADA.

To be clear, this does not mean “no content moderation.” At all. That would be a disaster. It means content moderation should happen at the platform level (think: Facebook, mastodon, discord, Twitter) not at the infrastructure level (think: Comcast, cloudflare, PayPal, Tucows)

@arossp@mastodon.social that's where the "in places of public accommodation" comes in. Personally I don't think anyone should use Face ID on their phone either (it normalized biometric collection and it's just a bad security practice) but I'm not sure it should be illegal.
But it should absolutely be illegal for a restaurant or grocery store or bar or venue or doctor's office to use this on people who can't meaningfully consent to biometric surveillance

@kitoconnell@kolektiva.social @oh_that_courtney@hachyderm.io please don't dismiss or ignore the dozens of human rights groups from the global south that signed this letter. You can disagree with them, but this is not just "EFF"

@oh_that_courtney@hachyderm.io So deplatform them at ... the platform level. Infrastructure level censorship is weaponized against marginalized people. It's a war we always lose. Governments around the world claim all kinds of legitimate content is "a threat to safety" and demand it be taken down. Do you support censorship at the ISP level in violation of #netneutrality? I doubt it.
