@tokyo_0@mas.to @dbattistella@mstdn.ca @su_liam@mas.to @mason@partychickens.net Police will always conjure something up. Here's what I found in The National: """ Williamson said that after he finished, the police officers told him repeatedly that he had been “causing fear and alarm” by reading out the poem. (...) A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “A man was arrested in the Argyll Street area of Dunoon on Saturday, 4 July, 2026, in connection with threatening and abusive behaviour and failing to provide his details when required by police. “Due to an ongoing incident nearby, the man was de-arrested. “A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in connection with these offences.” """

""" The European Union has unveiled proposals that would slow cuts to businesses' greenhouse gas emissions limits, as part of a major climate policy overhaul. "We are adopting a more business-friendly and, may I say so, savvy approach," said EU climate commissioner Wopke Hoekstra. Responding to the proposals, Polish climate minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska said Poland would push to weaken the policy further. EU proposes slowing down cuts to carbon emissions for businesses

Under the proposals, the EU plans to relax its emissions trading system to give companies more time to reduce their carbon output.

We’re officially retiring the Fairphone 3 and 3+, but we still have reason to celebrate.

@praetor@mstdn.social @Npars01@mstdn.social @randahl@mastodon.social The amount of oil the US imports from Norway is really miniscule, and easily replaceable: https://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/PET_MOVE_IMPCUS_D_NUS_NNO_MBBL_A.htm Not all oil is equal though. If anyone has any leverage on the US it's Canada. They have the heavier, sour crude that the US refineries want: https://afdc.energy.gov/data/10621

@praetor@mstdn.social @Npars01@mstdn.social @randahl@mastodon.social Most of Norway oil is exported to Europe: https://www.norskpetroleum.no/en/production-and-exports/exports-of-oil-and-gas/#oil-and-gas-exports They haven't migrated to renewables, they're just doing what they always did: https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/energy-consumption-by-source-and-country?stackMode=absolute&country=~NOR

Exports of Norwegian oil and gas - Norwegianpetroleum.no

Norway is a small player in the global crude market, but a larger player in the regional gas market. Nearly all oil and gas produced in Norway is exported, and combined, makes oil and gas the most important export commodities in the Norwegian economy.

All that news about amazing growth of solar and wind, how cheap renewable energy is now or new "investments" into green growth always make me ask "OK, but are we burning less fossil fuels?" And the answer invariably is "Oh, this will happen eventually, obviously the invisible hand of the market will sort this out."

This is such a dangerous belief in the system that got us into this mess in the first place. Ignoring externalities will always be more profitable. This problem requires a systemic fix, not slapping a green sticker on top.

@MisuseCase@twit.social @Benaresh@mastodon.social Yeah, it is a weird argument. It's like saying that supporters of hydroelectric dams want to undercut wind and solar. Just like nuclear, dams are a source of low-carbon electricity and take years to build. It's a false dichotomy. Just take a look at China, continuously deploying new solar, wind _and_ nuclear (not to mention coal 😢) power plants. @amhrasmussen@universeodon.com Yes, for some specific narrow definition of "we". However, we all live on a single planet and share one atmosphere that doesn't care about national borders. The only time our emissions went down globally was during economic turmoil (1992, 2009, 2020). Still, I boosted that post, as any small win counts. It's not nothing. But it's not enough.

@Benaresh@mastodon.social @MisuseCase@twit.social How did the Swedish government cut renewables? All I heard was this: """ Sweden will struggle to hit its 2030 emissions targets, a government agency warned on Monday, after the country's minority coalition cut the biofuel that must be added to diesel and gasoline. The right-wing Sweden Democrats-backed coalition government has already cut fuel taxes, raised tax breaks for people driving to work and ended new electric vehicles subsidies. @riley@toot.cat Arguably that's what governments around the world have been doing. Unfortunately, all the bills have a fire symbol on them.
