@mshelton@mastodon.social As an embedded developer, it's surprising to me that they would use an Android platform for such a device, given the alternatives. If you were a serious device developer. Unless you gave a demo once using an Android Tablet/Phone and some genius decided "let's just use that platform for production, because why not".

There's Moore's Law, but then there's "Software Developer Law", which is : "Software expands to consume twice the available resources, no matter how vast" And developers always have the latest, fastest platforms. For a while, it was encouraged because it sold new HW every year or two. Now we can make a quantum leap forward by deleting the past 15 years of cruft from the stack.

After that experience, I absolutely do not EVER trust my TV set software with access to my home network, for running apps or anything else. Not even firmware updates. @mshelton@mastodon.social It's astonishing to me that people are bent on using a software stack that : 1 - They have no control over 2 - Ingests content from other sources illegally/immorally and obfuscates the original source. 3 - Explicitly say in the TOS you can't trust its output to be accurate. 4 - Will hack your competitors, or anyone, illegally, and you are responsible for that. 5 - You upload your own proprietary IP and secrets to, with no NDA.

All of them reserve blocks of MAC addresses, usually from the NIC manufacturer's block, where it would be easy to block all traffic from "Samsung TV sets" or "Roku Devices" or "Apple TV".

To which I say, come back when you have complied with my TOS, and have not ingested content into your "training dataset" which you have no right to. Policymakers should simply overturn Citizen's United, most of it will then take care of itself. Software is speech.
