Not that you ever have anything figured out, but 9/11 happening when I was 24 years old was certainly a pivotal time, coming when I was settling in to an adult, working life. The appalling political aftermath galvanized my views on a lot of things & was the true boundary between the 20th and 21st centuries. Living & working adjacent to NYC, then moving to DC within the next couple years, felt like a front row seat to much of it. IDK what the point of this post is other than all the feels. 💜

Enjoyed downtown Sunday Parkways today. Feels like fall! 🍂🌦️🚲
Very excited to get involved with Compu-Global-Hyper-Mega-Net as shown off by @CursedSilicon@social.treehouse.systems this past weekend at #teardown2026.

“But they remained publicly silent. It was a silence born of fear-fear of social, political, and economic reprisals. The ultimate tragedy of Birmingham was not the brutality of the bad people, but the silence of the good people.”
Come to this August 8! I'm *probably* going to bring my 1989 computer running a web editor, server, and browser again. @courtney@pdx.social
Seeing Brandi Carlile, Bonnie Raitt, and Sara Bareilles tonight in this amazing place.
Made it to George, WA after camping last night in Yakima Canyon and a quick, steep hike this morning. Today, the festival setup is hard to beat.
Excited to be attending #teardown2026 here in Portland as usual. So lucky to have such a great conference and community right here at home. And major kudos to @helenleigh@chaos.social already for the work.
Home, almost exactly one week to the hour after hitting the road. Ready for some home time.
Getting on the road today for a van camping trip up through Yakima area and a show at the Gorge Amphitheater (in George, WA) this weekend before rounding the way back to Seattle mid-week. Doing the talk next Thursday’s at Seattle @Xcoders@mastodon.social on @swiftlang@mastodon.social result builders and the swift-parsing project! 🏔️🚐💨
@schwa@mastodon.social I think Messages is more likely to happen first, despite being E2EE. Look at the “someone shared this link with you” that integrates with a top banner in Safari. Some helpful feature like “Topics” or some such that pulls out conversation points in the UI, then eventually gets suggested links and ads. Some numbers-go-up person there is already peeing themselves over the possibilities, I’m sure. The lock-in is too good!
A friend of mine is starting up an aspirationally-monthly computer art salon, an evening of discussion for computer enthusiasts and artists. As it says, the intersection of code, art, hardware, and society. Planning on going next Tuesday, maybe showing, you should too! https://clipdx.com/arthack/
If this isn't a cure for the AI blues, I don't know what is. This is the future I want. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GurWDZ8ENpA
@schwa@mastodon.social There seems to be a rise in people surfacing who can do or choose to do what people don’t normally do as a way to gain power: unending eye contact, no embarrassment or shame, forcing others to look away or stop pressing or just not want to meet the friction.
