Walking to the conference venue, I wondered why there were tram lines all over the place but Maps was telling me the quickest route was to walk
Turns out Delft is getting a brand new tram line, currently in the testing phase, opening slightly too late for this trip.
Always amazing to see cities building new trams! (Even if I don’t get to ride them!)
Somewhat surprising observation: the code I’m working on running in Docker on my M1 MacBook Pro (in an arm64 container, not via Rosetta) runs appreciably slower than running natively on an old mid-2010s Intel iMac.
The evening before I head to Delft is the best time to find out that I’ve somehow lost _all_ of my Europlug to ISO/IEC C17 cables and duck heads.

@jon That is quite a perverse outcome—I guess one might want to do it as end to end time, or total train minutes, with current timetables in that case? (I’d say “minimal possible train minutes on current infrastructure, but OpenRailRouting gives some really weird results when you try that.)

@jon A version of the route-km longest trip that might work is the pair of stations, connectable via scheduled rail service, where the shortest connection (without specifying any vias) is the longest. A first guess would be taking your final route and prepending the leg up from Helsinki. But it’s much harder to do an exhaustive search than geodesic distance, so I’m not about to start writing the article on that one!

Has anyone else noticed a phase transition in YouTube ads in the last couple of weeks, where suddenly 80% of ads are for slop idle/mobile games, and come with an extra banner ad that has to be dismissed otherwise it persists over the video?

@scarlet@chaos.social As an iPhone 15 Pro owner, I do think something about the thermal design/power consumption of that particular generation was especially broken, given how frequently my phone gets too hot to touch without a case, and how it needs charging 2–3 times a day (when the 8 Plus with a damaged battery it replaced needed 3–4). Good that they’ve fixed it though.
RealTimeTrains is pulling data from the alternative reality where today’s Eurostar wasn’t curtailed to start from Bruxelles due to engineering work near Rotterdam.
Really disturbing: I just managed to get my Mac into a state where it was displaying one user account on the built-in monitor and a different user account on the external monitor (and projector).
Given that I use a dedicated user account for teaching, I'm glad that I didn't have anything too confidential open on the private account, since there was no way to move the mouse to the external display to close it.
Once I'm not in a workshop I'll see if I can work out how to reproduce the issue.
