Anbernic did it. They fixed the RG DS, calling it the RG DS Plus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_ZBKwptV5U

Based on the video they have at least fixed:

  • The screens are 1024x768 now, the exact resolution I wish the original used.
  • It comes with Linux from the start rather than Android (The original RG DS got a Linux image later)
  • The stylus can now be stored inside the console
  • The device is now bigger, mimicking the DSi XL better rather than being a in-between of the DSi XL and DS Lite
  • The price is the same

Some weird things though:

  • They lowered the RAM from 3GB to 1GB (thanks component crisis)
  • This one is dual-microSD with no eMMC. Original was eMMC + single microSD slot.
  • Same SoC, which didn't always perform great. Remains to see if Android->Linux switch can provide enough of a performance bump instead

I might actually buy this one. I was on the fence about the RG DS, but if the Plus gets more coverage online and no massive issues pop up, I'm likely going to snag one.

@pernia@cum.salon @phnt@fluffytail.org @VD15@pl.valkyrie.world why yes. you can pipe data around however you want. it's one of the main advantages to what remains of the unix-philosophy where things just expect to receive data streams on stdin and then spit them back out after processing. Sending a file to /dev/sdb is FAR from the most cursed thing you can do by connecting unexpected applications together. for example "ssh server cat videofile.mp4 | mpv -" will ssh into a machine, read a video file to stdout from said remote machine, which you can then pipe into your local mpv player. *nix OSes just don't give shit, and that's the point

@kumicota@akkoma.kumicota.moe Oh they do, every day. Although at this point I agree, because I feel like nobody at HQ has the competence to maintain on-premises infra. There's like a single guy there who understands how the SAN works ant whatnot, if they're gone it a catastrophe and it doesn't seem like they're going to hire another person for the job. At that point just stick it in the cloud, otherwise I'll have to spend my days fixing their shit remotely. I've been on sick leave for two years anyways, so at this point I'm not too heavily involved in these decisions.

@stefan@akko.lightnovel-dungeon.de @nixCraft@mastodon.social Yeah, flip phones and "dumbphones" are trendy again. I love it, I've missed flip phones. Dunno if I'm too interested in the commodore though, sailfish is cool, I'm not really too interested in the whole "dumb" aspect of these trendy phones. I just want a proper Android phone that's also a flip phone (like my current style folder 2). For example I dunno how the commodore phone would handle my banking app, which isn't just picky about the Android base it runs on, it doesn't respect D-pad navigation, it's one of the apps where I have to fall back to using the touchscreen on my current phone. Rather than the commodore callback, I'd be more interested in a flip variant of the dumber mini: https://dumbermini.com/ (which despite its name is not a dumbphone, it runs full android with a touchscreen if needed)

@VD15@pl.valkyrie.world No, I think certain animations are baked at 30fps. I think I noticed that with some animations in the menus too and saw it once or twice during short segments of cutscenes. i guess while the game is running at 60fps, some animations simply aren't 60fps and don't get interpolated.

@stormbringer@noauthority.social Well I'm sure it can be set up with any distro using a cronjob or similar. But I'm not sure I trust the error handling and recovery paths unless it's officially supported. For example Linux Mint lets you easily enable automatic updates in the manager with a checkbox and has prime support for timeshift in case recovery would be needed as both belong to their Xapps project. It's why I'm leaning towards Mint or Zorin. I don't think I'd trust pacman-offline to keep working for 9 months without me being able to touch it

Long shot, but does anyone know how to remove a drawer where an idiot has installed the rails backwards? I can't get my kitchen drawers out because the idiot who installed this kitchen mounted the rails backwards. Meaning the larger rail is mounted to the drawer instead of the inside, and the smaller rail is mounted inside. And the latch to release the drawer is therefore unavailable. Search engines only give me AI slop results

@simon_m@infosec.exchange Unfortunately I'm very far out of the SBC loop, so I'm not sure I can help you here. I can tell you that my general recommendation is typically to not use anything besides a Raspberry Pi for deployments without custom OS images, because everything outside of RPis tend to lack or have sketchy long-term software support. Ask yourself: What state will the Banana Pi be in 8 years from now? Will it be on an outdated OS because you don't trust the distro to be well tested enough with your particular device for updates to be reliable? Will you need to switch distros three times to get updates because distros keep dropping support for the device so you need to waste time hopping to a new one every 3 years for continued updates? Will the device stop being popular among the community so it stopped receiving any support in 3 years, meaning you needed to switch to a different device anyways? Every single SBC besides a Raspberry Pi fails the check above for me. Even if it doesn't, you won't know until you're already a few years deep, not up-front when you committing to the platform.

@stefan@akko.lightnovel-dungeon.de yeah thanks, i hadn't heard of it. I've wanted a flip phone for like 10+ years because I always thought Japanese keitai were cool. Unfortunately they're a bit too rough to use as a daily driver outside of Japan. So I fell down the rabbit hole about a month ago when I learned that the Mive Style Folder 2 existed. The main drawback of the Callback is the lack of a touchscreen, which is simply needed for a bunch of Android apps which can't handle d-pads. At such a high price I'll have to wait for a few reviews before I consider dropping cash on it. Also glossy plastic. I despise glossy plastic. My Style folder 2 had it only on the top, so I covered it with matte stickers, but the commodore phones all look overly glossy in the photos. I don't care what the price is, if it's glossy it goes in the trash

Like they try to explain it away with stratified random sampling. But I don't see how that works online. It works in real life because it's pretty difficult to just invent new birth certificates to increase your chance of being randomly selected. But online I don't think this helps at all because stuff like making a crapload of non-posting accounts with fake identities to read random content and skew polls as they're picked is something you can... just do, like pretty easily.

@VD15@pl.valkyrie.world I dunno how the original game does things and how 60fps mods look, but they can either keyframe the animation and the engine figured out the movement in-between. But in the past, and for low-performance consoles like the Switch 1, I wouldn't put it past them to "bake" the animation instead. Where you relieve the engine of animation work by instead storing 30 (or whatever framerate) sets of position data per second, so the console only has to display the models in that position each frame, rather than calculating where they should be. My guess is that some stuff is baked at 30fps, and simply didn't get re-exported as 60fps, nor converted to using keyframes. The simplest way to convert stuff would be to mark those 30 sets as being regular keyframes rather than static positions, so the switch 2 would calculate the 30 missing to achieve 60fps. But they either didn't do that, or simply forgot to do so some places.

We've been trying to block bots and automated attacks ever since the first captcha came along (and realistically before that as well), if we still haven't figured it out, i don't see how these people would have any better chance at doing so.

@wolf480pl@mstdn.io Even if we make the REALLY generous assumption that they manage to perfectly discern a bot vote. How do you discern a common opinion and a "coordinated response" if they're both from humans. The algorithm needs to somehow know if all the "3" responses it gets are genuinely what people believe, or if people just clicked it to be funny. Even without bots, the internet WILL constantly try to make another "Boaty McBoatface" happen. Without needing to coordinate.

@wolf480pl@mstdn.io >they said they will filter bot votes after the bots have already voted eh, same shit different ass >but I don't know they're gonna have enough information in a vote to be able to discern that... Even with more info, especially in the age of LLMs that's especially difficult. Even Steam can't hope to figure it out, they add a notice telling you that a game might've been review bombed, but that's mostly it. If from a computer's perspective it basically only sees "1, 2, 3 or 4", how the heck is it supposed to be able to tell if a flood of 3s is made of illegitimate votes or if it's just a legit popular opinion? Are they supposed to supplement it with a lot of device info and fingerprinting which they then cram into an algorithm to guess if you're human or not? At that point it loops back to "no thanks". And even if they did it'd end up like the captcha system, where anyone running linux or another "less common" configuration would essentially be excluded from the vote.

he's currently on windows. but even that's a struggle. his laptop is tethered to a desk with an ethernet cable because he was completely lost every time the wifi was in a bad mood. because connecting to a wifi network is so above his skill level that it requires a multi-hour phone call of which a full hour is just trying to make him find the 🛜 button in the corner. this new craptop i'm giving him probably isn't powerful enough to even remotely handle windows, so i wanna put linux on it. but i fear that even zorin os or linux mint might be too complex for him. if the OS even dares to give him a pop up saying "hey, we recommend setting a sign-in password on your account for security" the laptop would probably fly out the window
