Well, it happened. I managed to creep out two teenage girls late last evening as I was scanning some new area I happened to be in using @streetcomplete@mastodon.social
It was a long dead-end street, I heard them (c. teenagers) far back, but stopping here and there to add the info on the app they got closer. So I started walking further, in the hopes they'll eventually go into a house. They ended up walking all the way to the end. Had to play dumb and fidget with a hydrant, while they passed me silently. shit😑

How did factories and autonomy work before July 2025 when the tech-bros invented the phrase 'Physical AI'?

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org counting cars from space became feasible when commercial VHR came about some 2 decades ago https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0262885606003544 Since then, the "counting cars in mall parking lot as an indicator of commercial activity" became the industry trope of the next billion dollar product. Then came the floating roof oil tanks, no one has ever made a viable, profitable product from it, yet here we are, 2026, satellite companies still "counting cars from space"

The fun side of having your employer field an LLM-based IT ticketing tirage, in a public slack channel, is that you can what everyone else is complaining about.

The top 3 request are:
Admin permissions to install or upgrade software
troubleshooting recurring VPN/login credential

and of course,
Claude quotas and limits. I'm seeing people being deskilled in front of my eyes when their session expires or limit reached then poof, like they don't know how to do their work.

lol-cry

@nickrsan I don't think GEE can ever be profitable. It's an amazing niche, and Google are leveraging GEE as an analysis/insight tier over their maps platform. But look at what made headlins for GEE: environment, climate, humanitarian. There's no money in it. So becuase it's not a standalone website, it makes slightly harder to adopt. And once the corporates will see the bottom lines, they'll pull the plug. Google have a horrìd track record in this regard, I'm not an optimist.

Didn't google also scan all the books which we then collectively reCaptcha their digitzation?
Couldn't Amodei just steal that dataset?

@ombialik@mastodon.world Completely agree. Been there, done that. Worked on, analyzed, published, in some form or another, open data regarding oceans, for IOLR, Ministry of Environmental Protection, HUJI, TAU/Steinhardt Museum, Haifa U. Seen other works by Technion, Mapi, INPA, GII. The data is there, but very cumbersome to maintain, govern, search and access, because unlike terrestrial, with easily demarcated limits and jurisdictions, water is water.
