@daycoder@toot.wales How cool to have a triangular window. We're getting some rotten windows replaced this week but they're boring old rectangular ones.

mastodon 4.7.2I used to edit books, mostly for Faber & Faber, but I've been disabled by Long Covid since 2022. Housebound and mostly horizontal. Being kept sane by cricket and family, not necessarily in that order. Permanently foggy brain and low battery, so if I disappear mid-conversation, it probably wasn't something you said.

I can't stop laughing at the word 'simply' in this book blurb.
Decades later this aesthetic persists in children's play kitchens, even as real kitchen design has moved on through several revolutions.
Off to the optician later. That'll be the eighth time I've left the house in 2026.
Used to have ridiculously good eyesight but I've now got to the point of having to hold my phone at arm's length to read anything... Shall I go for half-moon reading glasses or the full Edna Everage?
Just been reminded that not everyone's seen the Horrible Histories Dick Turpin/Adam Ant song.

@Gaolaitch@cupoftea.social no, it's a misconception made popular because the old genitive ending '-es' sounds like 'his'.
How nice to wake up to good news.

In further evidence of how unreliable my memory has become: this morning I remembered I copy-edited one of Mackenzie Crook's children's books in 2013 (The Lost Journals of Benjamin Tooth, which also features small magical creatures). Looking back through files I find a lot of emails from him - a lovely chap to correspond with and unsurprisingly funny. So strange how things just get wiped.

@theplaguedoc@glitterkitten.co.uk It would be interesting to know whether they think their students should also be using LLMs to generate "work".

Had such a good dream last night, in which I was in a gang of urchins finding lost diamonds in 1990s Slough. Was quite annoyed to wake up.
Once again the Kiwis win with underhand tactics such as 'concentrating' and 'not mucking about'. #cricket

So the 'underwater welder' story is a reference to when Clea gets impaled with the harpoon?

Until the beginning of May, you can get a year's subscription to Wisden Cricket Monthly digital edition for £14. I think this is absurdly good value.

@swisslet I was a huge Durrell fan and at one point was going to do a PhD on him... but you do have to be in the mood for him.
Do I know anyone on here who has experience of being the appointee for a family member's PIP (or DWP interactions in general)? I have a question about admin/record-keeping and would really appreciate a bit of advice from someone who's done it. No personal or sensitive info required! All the online advice is vague or sloppy and my fogged brain can't sort through it.

@chrischirp@fediscience.org Great to see @trishgreenhalgh@fediscience.org noting that LC patients need to pace themselves and that efforts to push for performance increases can cause long-term harm.
It would be amazing if she could help bring pressure on the Cochrane Library to remove its seriously flawed 2019 review of exercise for ME/CFS, which is leading some unwitting clinicians to advise LC patients to over-exert, causing serious harm.

@cabel@social.panic.com When the UK Legoland theme park was being built in the 90s, they put mini construction workers made of Lego around the site, with different Lego tools and machines and so on. I was doing deliveries to the site for a few months so I could see them move around the different builds as it all progressed. Just a lovely sense of fun.

@Troggie@beige.party Hello, just remembered I meant to reply to this the other day!
My anti-slug tactics are:
1) Stick to planting things with woody stems that slugs aren't keen to eat - roses, lavender, rosemary, philadelphus, hebe, peonies...
2) Sluggo is quite effective and not harmful to pets or other wildlife: https://www.neudorff.co.uk/products/sluggo-slug-snail-killer.html

@janisarmstrong That's so good to know, thank you!
Can I ask - when they say that records of expenditure need to be kept, does that mean you literally have to keep a set of accounts for outgoings? Or just that they could potentially ask to see bank statements?
