mastodon 4.7.2+glitchDon’t shine that thing in my face, man.
Been digging the new Maya Ongaku LP. It’s the perfect name for the music on this album, very chill, almost ambient at times. But then a tracks like Thinkingscape has this great outro jam that you could really imagine going to even cooler places live.
Throw this one on late at night or with your first cup of coffee in the morning.

Whelp, it’s time to clean the toilet.
I do not usually discuss politics in this little corner of Mastodon but as a Mainer, I’m so damn pissed at Platner and his campaign right now.
He was credibly accused of rape. That’s a bright line for many many (hopefully most) Dem voters. He’s done. And yet because of his entitlement and hubris (and that of those running his campaign) he still hasn’t dropped out of the race.
And now, more than 48 hours after the credible allegations surfaced he still hasn’t dropped out. And now he’s circulating a “survey” of his supporters because he still thinks he has some say in the direction of this race for the Dems? Based on an anonymous online survey? What a clown show. 🤡
Been really digging this LP. Booker Stardrum has been on a handful of my favorite releases this year, so l’ll always give his stuff a spin. (Also, can you think of a better name for a drummer?).
Recommended if you like anything in the Jeff Parker Musical Universe (ETA IVtet, SML, etc).
Caught a truly wonderful performance by Bill Frisell and his trio last night at Space in Portland, Maine. They played non-stop for about 70 minutes (plus an encore).
This show is right up there with Tyshawn Sorey and Natural Information Society for best shows I’ve seen this year. Just incredible musicianship + communication, joyful playing, and oh man Bill’s guitar tone. 😍
Billy scales up really well! (I realize I am breaking no news here). This was the best of the three BS shows I’ve seen (the prior two at the State and Thompson’s Point). Just a fantastic arena show. Loved it.
ICYMI, this is a new Four Tet album (just under indecipherable and unpronounceable symbols instead of his name). To find it on streaming services, search for “Wingdings” and it should pop up.
If you’re a Four Tet fan you’ll surely dig it.
Happy Phish Fukuoka Day, to all who celebrate!
If you dig SML, this album is worth a spin (featuring SML’s drummer).
Psych-Ethio jazz / afrobeat from Belgium? Why not! Really digging this while watching the USMNT.
The new Basic LP far surpasses their debut LP and follow-up EP (both of which I liked). This really takes the band to a whole new level. I’m a big Forsyth fan, but even if you’re not it’s worth a spin. It’s really fucking great!
This is a very cool album. I’d definitely categorize it as jazz. Portions of the album are more straightforward sounding, but Schatz (who tours with Japanese Breakfast), also loops and otherwise manipulates a piano and other instruments. The centerpiece of the album is a 21-minute track that really covers a ton of ground.
