RE: https://climatejustice.social/@ketan/117309631799402974 Before you use AI to "create" a song 🙄 or ask chatGPT for information you could track down yourself, spare a thought for the places where those data centers are. This is why tech companies only want voluntary and partial standards for clean energy. They keep talking about how they're "powering clean energy" and "driving the energy transition", but look what happens when you hold them to that claim https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/st-louis-data-center-lawsuit-b3052142.html

I keep looking at AI and thinking that it's promising the same things object oriented programming was "supposed" to do, only people are taking the claims much more seriously. People seem to have become more credulous over three decades, not more critical.

@gerrymcgovern@mastodon.green I live in one of the greenest parts of Boston, and it's not unusual to hear loud birds at 3AM. My community garden is in another part of Boston, and we've made sure to plant such that we attract pollinators and birds. And it's working. I live in luxury because I have greenery in my life. Please, protect your existing forests and plant smaller things native to your area! 1/

@MissConstrue@mefi.social What makes me want to scream is that this was predictable for months. Once that NYT story dropped--and that was hardly the first beat--I knew that there was more waiting to be dropped at the worst possible time. This didn't require being psychic, it required awareness of previous history. People showed their asses with this one. Outlets like @theprospect@mastodon.world that scolded us to respect realpolitik acted like they couldn't see what was coming. Once again, if it's about women--eh.

@futurebird@sauropods.win I might be more of an extremist than most, but I took my books off of Amazon years ago, and I left Twitter and Facebook early on. And as much as the final straw was over ethics, the business terms on Amazon were increasingly predatory. (Same, I hear, for Facebook, but I never used it as such.) The "reach" that you might get on big platforms is not free, sooner or later.

'No one is prepared for the consequences' Would you people shut up already? I heard these lines uttered in bad 70s cop shows. You sound like dorks. But also: you're worried about "agents" blackmailing people? Wow, that's really specific, and not suspicious at all. As I said, dorks. https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-chief-scientist-ai-risks-slowdown-rogue-agents-consequences-safety-2026-9 #technology

@gerrymcgovern@mastodon.green It is disheartening that people refuse to believe that the promises we have been sold about The Next Great Energy Revolution, the benefits of which are always just around the corner, five to ten years out, are not much better than vaporware. Because this has been going on for centuries! People, coal became popular as a way to "transition" away from wood. The result: we used more wood than ever--what do you think the struts that held up those coal mines were made of? 2/

It's not available yet for everyone to read, but the Granillo v. State decision out of the Hawai'i Supreme Court is the forceful rebuttal to the predations of the Roberts' SCOTUS that a lot of us have been waiting for.

(I believe Todd Eddins wrote the opinion. Here's more about him https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todd_W._Eddins)

If nothing else, this case should be the basis for the "packing" of the court when we throw MAGA out, if not why we need to impeach Roberts et al.

And now the LLMs. I'm bitter because he encouraged enthusiasm about the first two before they both had their WTF moment. Now I'm just entrenched in cynicism. He's also boosted some renewable bs--sodium batteries?--and I can only roll my eyes. Sorry, babbling.

I think the author does a good job of unpacking a lot of the misogyny. FTR, I don't think cheating has to exclude someone. If I could have voted in 1988, I would have voted for Hart. But we're past that, and Anthony Weiner is a more recent demonstration of why we have to be weary about lousy judgment. I need to drink some seltzer now.

@Remittancegirl@mstdn.social I spent a decade being chilled by how many people didn't care about Syria as it was playing out in real-time. (They stopped counting casualties for a long time.) One explanation is that most human beings can't comprehend numbers after a certain point, and it becomes too abstract to care. Another explanation is that we don't talk about things enough because we want to focus on how much better everything is now.

@Linux@planet.moe Clinton's victory in 1992 bought us three more decades of reproductive rights. The difference between a Trump win and an HRC win in 2016 is the SCOTUS we have today. I know all about how imperfect both Clintons are. I don't care. They were always better than their actual alternatives, not the ones I would have wished for.

@Linux@planet.moe Then everyone needs to vote in the primaries so we don't end up with these choices. But if we do, not voting ends up screwing us. Voting for the centrist in the general isn't making any changes, but it's buying us time that's keeping the right from sending us back to the 19th century.

There was a question about LLMs that dominated my feed. (I'm not avoiding the original thread to be passive aggressive; my filters are such that I don't see all of the posts, and replies might get weird. I'm not complaining.) I saw enough to understand that there is a suggestion to make artificial, ahem, intelligence less toxic in every way. What I didn't see: WHAT is the use case for these tools? WHY do we need these things? People are desperate for work now. Why is this the time? #tech

@Linux@planet.moe I completely disagree. I would vote for Clinton, Gore, Obama, HRC, Biden, and Harris all over again. As imperfect as they were, they were better than Bush I, Dole, Bush II, McCain, Romney, and Trump, and the differences were real. I don't get to build candidates in a lab; I have to go with what's available. Yeah, it's terrible to have bad options, but not choosing is the worst option of all. I'm not going to let other people choose for me.
