Dan Jones
Husband, Father, Software Engineer (PHP, go, etc.). Lover of Star Trek and anime.
Looking for other things to do, such as writing, acting, voice acting, but not really finding the time for it. Maybe when my kids are a little older, I'll get back on stage.

FYI. The "least you could do" is always nothing. Anything is always more than nothing. So, when you do the minimum that a decent human being would do, you're not doing the least you could do. You're doing the least that you should do. Or, you're just being the minimum of a decent human being.
To be clear, that's not insignificant, because so many people are not decent human beings. So, kudos to that.
This morning, my son asked me if he could have French toast with Nutella on it. I told him the French toasts was already sweetened, so Nutella would be overkill.
So, guess what I'm having for lunch?
Go ahead, call me a hypocrite. I would say that, like Walt Whitman, I am large; I contain multitudes.
I just watched the first episode of Filing for Love, and I have to say that I love Shin Hye-sun in every role I've ever seen her in. I'm so happy there's another new show with her.
I wish I could forget See You in My 19th Life so I could watch it again for the first time.

I'm going to lax. And then later, I'm going to relax.
When Worf uses a Universal Translator, does it translate for him into Klingon, or Russian?
Hey, Google you're already increasing the price of my YouTube Music subscription. So, I'm not going to be subscribing to YouTube TV as well.
The best part of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was when they restored the heart of Te Fiti.
Trump is releasing more UFO files in hopes that we'll forget he still hasn't released all the Epstein files and that the ones he did release are still mostly heavily redacted, protecting his pedo buddies.
Iran's propaganda folks have released a Lego rap video literally calling the President of the United States the Antichrist.
And I'm not sure that's the strangest thing that's happened during the Trump regime.
What a time to be alive.
During a meeting:
Team Lead: So, Dan, what do you think of this approach? Will this work for us?
Me: Yes, I was definitely listening to everything that was said and not scrolling through my social feed, so I fully understand what was being discussed and agree with the proposed plan.
😧 Shaving a lot of yak today.
I'm watching Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 5x15: By Inferno's Light, and it's crazy how much Dukat foreshadows Trump.
He completely disregards everybody's lives for his own elevation, even going so far as letting his own daughter die, and then says, "You should see the monument they're erecting in my honor", paralleling all the gaudy nonsense Trump is doing, like putting his name on everything he can.
He sells out his own people to placate foreign powers (Russia, Israel).
And then Dukat finishes with "I did this to make Cardassia strong again." Just like "Make America Great Again".
The only thing they're missing would be Dukat making inappropriately sexual comments about Ziyal.
Grapes can dried and turned into raisins. Cranberries can be dried and turned into craisins. What other fruits are good when aisined?

The Lorax according to my eight-year-old:

I'm pretty sure the White House Correspondence Dinner shooter was just trying to get more attention for his game on Steam.
I once wrote some PHP code that looked like this:
// 🎶 I put my thang down, flip it, and reverse it
return array_flip(array_intersect(array_flip($allTests), $chosenTestKeys));
A few months later, I came back to this code, and noticed my comment had been changed.
// I put my thing down, flip it, and reverse it
I looked at git blame to see who had mangled my comment. His git commit message was "Fix intermittent failing test", as if my comment somehow had something to do with an intermittently failing test.
This was eight years ago. I never got a chance to change my comment back. To this day, I can't hear a song by Missy Elliott and not be annoyed at the other dev who messed up my comment.
Me: I'm neurotypical.
TikTok: Yeah. I didn't think so.
Fediverse: Yeah, me neither.
I've been using this account as my primary for about a week now, and I'm think I'm settled on using it for the foreseeable future, so I guess it's time to do another #introduction post.
I'm a dad of four kids, and a web developer. I have a college degree in #Theater (or #Theatre) and had aspirations of being an actor. I kind of fell into web development as a career. It was a hobby back in high school, and I just needed to pay some bills after college, so I ended up doing this.
I always have aspirations to do other things, but for now, I'm pretty happy spending most of my time as a dad and husband.
Some day, I'd like to get back into #acting, or maybe do some #VoiceActing. I also enjoy #writing and will, from time to time, post some #MicroFiction, usually from somebody's #WritingPrompt.
I love #StarTrek, and usually watch at least one episode nearly every day. I like all #SciFi really, though, as well as #fantasy. I used to read a lot, but find I don't have as much time or mental capacity for it as I used to. I also enjoy watching #anime, and have really been enjoying the new episodes of #Bleach lately.
Feel free to follow me if you think we have similar interests, and I may follow you back, if I think likewise. 👋

I'm starting to learn Go. At work we're splitting out some parts of our architecture into a few microservices, and our Chief Architect decided we should write them in Go, instead of our usual PHP.
I've been enjoying learning it. It's been a long time since I've really tried to learn a completely new thing (as opposed to a new framework or whatever).
As a project to get myself into this, I've been thinking about building my own Fediverse server in go. Architecturally, I want it to be a lot like microblogpub, which I currently use. I actually want to be able to have a clear migration from one to the other.
Like microblogpub, my new project (which I'm tentatively calling gopub) will be a single user instance, intended to be easily hosted on your own computer, with a fairly simple sqlite database, and focused on broad ActivityPub and IndieWeb compatibility.
But I've got some ideas for a few features that I haven't seen elsewhere.
For example, I was thinking it might be cool to have alternate handles for a single user, to only follow certain things. E.g., if I'm user@fedi.tld, and somebody wants to follow me, but not see any boosts from others, instead of following user@fedi.tld, maybe they instead follow user+noboost@fedi.tld. Or, if they only want to follow my posts that include a particular hashtag, they can follow user+tag-tagname@fedi.tld.
Similarly, a single user with multiple handles would be nice. I think Friendica has this, but I'm considering including it in my project as well.
And one thing I really want to add is location check-in. Basically, the Fediverse equivalent of Foursquare. ActivityPub already has the vocabulary for this, but I haven't seen it implemented anywhere.
I'm still at the very, very early stages. Who knows if I'll ever get it in a usable state. And I'm working on it during my extremely limited free time. But I'm excited to start a new project.
Another day, another job rejection.
It's been almost three months since my layoff, and I keep getting close, and then losing out at the end.
This time, I had an interview with the hiring manager, two live coding challenges, and then another interview with upper management. In the end, they told me I didn't have enough front-end experience for the position. They had another candidate with more front-end experience than me. They wanted to bring me on anyway as another back-end developer, but the budget didn't warrant it.
So, I didn't do anything wrong, and they were impressed with my experience and talent, but still not enough to get the job.
This is frustrating, but also really getting scary. My savings is not going to last forever, and my insurance coverage ends at the end of August.
Anybody with any leads on jobs that maybe aren't posted yet, for a Senior or Staff developer in PHP or go (or some other language that I can learn), I would be forever grateful for them.
I searched on DuckDuckGo for "git diff include untracked files". The AI Search Assistant helpfully told me:
To include untracked files in your git diff, you can use the command
git diff --include-untracked.
It linked to this article which talks about the --include-untracked option.
Problem is, that option doesn't exist, and as far as I can tell, it never has. And I'm pretty sure that the linked article is AI-generated.
The ouroboros is eating its tail.

I just installed it today on my own computer. I had a few, very minor, hiccups*, but got it working pretty quickly, and intend to start using it as my private code forge.
*: Turns out that its built-in SSH server doesn't start if you already have SSH running on your computer, but, you have to use their built-in SSH server, if you want to use SSH to push to your repo. But, maybe I'll switch to using HTTPS anyway.
