RE: @CenterforOpenScience@fosstodon.org

yea - big changes coming here

tldr:

> The Open Science Framework (OSF) announced they are winding down core parts of the platform over the next twelve months. If you use OSF as a key part of your research workflow, you will be forced to change how you work. No new projects after November 16th (2026) and all projects frozen on February 19th (2027).

my longer reflections

so glad i set up the approval process for new accounts on ResearchEquals - already caught several potential issues.

i am learning a lot about AI generated content, and they're getting very intricate. paper mills are passé, they're now coming to the various repositories etc to lay breadcrumbs of seeming authenticity.

any repository/platform that does not do approval, is increasingly being weaponized for this. i am looking at several places that do not have active moderation...

RE: @andreaswalker@openbiblio.social

putting all our eggs in one open research information basket is risky. what alternatives are there to OpenAlex?

I get they have a business to run, infra costs money, and that sorting is an existential threat to them

I am going to give @CryptPad@social.xwiki.com another chance. They are focusing on individuals subscribing for sustaining the project, and I want to see whether that fits my workflow this time around.

There's not many aspirational pieces I find inspiring anymore these days, but the Global Justice Report paints an incredibly convincing picture:

> Its main conclusion is simple: it is possible to reconcile planetary habitability and high well-being for all, but only if the transformation rests on three pillars simultaneously. Fast decarbonization [...] sufficiency [...] and large changes in consumption patterns, food habits, land use, and forest cover.

a pet peeve of mine is when software platforms do not implement autocomplete for the two-factor code in their login procedure

it literally is as simple as adding `autoComplete="one-time-code" ` to your input field 🤷‍♀️

```html
autoComplete="one-time-code"
...
/>
```

Fascinating – apparently lots of traffic lights, cars, trams, buses send unencrypted radio signals which can be livetracked

crossref decided to use XML 1.1 for the 5.5.0 schema (up from 5.4.0)

XML 1.1 is not widely used or supported in 2026, so using it for "additional in-schema validation" is not worth it. Browsers don't support it for example (see image)

afaik, this is a breaking change for a minor schema bump. down the rabbit hole i go as this creates a lot of downstream issues for my Rust crate `crossref-xml`

“What in 2017 was already a legitimate option, today is a legal obligation: The EU must suspend the Israel association agreement,” said Claudio Francavilla from the Human Rights Watch group. https://euobserver.com/221434/strictly-confidential-eu-entitled-to-suspend-israel-pact-due-to-west-bank-aggression-its-top-lawyer-said/

Leaked memo: EU has known since 2017 it had legal right to freeze Israel trade deal

A "strictly confidential", but leaked, EU legal memo from 2017 said Europe was entitled to freeze Israel science grants and free-trade perks over its West Bank aggression. "What was then a legitimate option, today is a legal obligation," an Italian expert said.

Interesting read from a game scenario's lessons, even if the outcome is disturbing.

> Forget the sermons about being committed to NATO’s Article 5. The single, underlying question is whether Germany believes that it’s worth going to war with Russia over the Baltics, even without U.S. help. Is there a genuine consensus on an answer to this question? Is Berlin willing, in the extreme, to endure Putin’s nuclear brinkmanship?

> Are Germans mentally ready for war?

Sign ups for Akademienl are now ≥30 fake registrations to 1 valid registration. Five-ish registrations a day.

The signal to noise ratio has gone down the drain, and if that's the strategy, it is incredibly successful.
