@AmeliaBR@front-end.social My guess is speccing video-like controls for animated images (hopefully with automatic honoring of prefers-reduced-motion).

Hampster Dance happens to be what I used when experimenting with JavaScript to pause all the animated image types, not just GIFs, on a page. I should revisit that and make it a bookmarklet.

Edit: I kind of skipped the part about which Working Group. Then again, CSS is supposed to be able to create buttons now so 🤷. @Meyerweb@mastodon.social

@igalia@floss.social I haven't finished the episode but at around 10:30, there's what sounds like an editing mistake. There's a period of silence followed by a bit where @Meyerweb@mastodon.social and a guest are speaking at the same time. A assume Eric's part was supposed to be in the silence. @bkardell@toot.cafe

@zersiax@cupoftea.social Thanks. Do you think that even if the anchor is misused to make a button instead of a link that it's still better to be misidentified as a link than nothing?

From the Accessibility section of Safari Technology Preview Release 247 notes: > Fixed an element with a click handler but no href not being exposed as a link. Apparently, this is what Chrome and Firefox already do but I don't like it; anchors without an href aren't links and there's no telling whether the click handler goes somewhere or does something else. I guess screen reader users can say if they prefer the odds of them behaving link-like over technical correctness. #a11yhttps://webkit.org/blog/18133/release-notes-for-safari-technology-preview-247/

@tezoatlipoca@mas.to The most important reason to use semantic HTML elements like , , etc. is they make the web understandable and useable by people with disabilities using assistive technologies like screen readers. The browser uses the HTML to create not only the DOM that's visually rendered but also an accessibility tree accessed through the operating system's accessibility APIs. There are other benefits, like having basic usability when there's a CSS error, when content is reused elsewhere like RSS feeds, and when people use a Reader Mode in their browser. #a11y@schrottkatze@social.treehouse.systems @fossheim@front-end.social

@NfNitLoop Yeah, this isn't about keeping up with what Chrome churns out but Safari's tendency to have regressions in well established HTML standards. I've repeatedly seen this with Safari and details / summary elements, particularly its representation in the accessibility tree. @adactio

@aardrian@toot.cafe What are situations when only using the conformance model is useful? I expect people want to know, for example, when the Time-based Media criteria Pass because all the media meet them vs. when there isn't any media and therefore the criteria Pass. VPATs and the WCAG-EM Report Tool use formats that allow accounting for more than the binary states.

@mahryekuh Most screen reader users have some vision, the visual and non-visual experiences should correspond. :focus-within would help the non-screen reader keyboard users but a screen reader's virtual cursor will not trigger it.

CSS checkbox hacks have existed for a long time but have always had the same accessibility issues; what :has() enabled is freedom for where the checkbox is in the DOM relative to what it reveals.

@mahryekuh When you can't see the menu links they *should* be removed from the accessibility tree. Also, the links will still be in the focus order when the menu is not visible. For a sighted keyboard user, focus will disappear until they Tab through all the links. I don't know what the checkbox is named but "checked" is not the state that conveys to a screen reader user that a menu is open, "expanded" is. You can get this without JS by using a with a popover though because mobile menus often cover all usable space, I think having them in a opened by `command="show-modal"` is better.

@joshtumath@mastodon.social Meeting WCAG criteria is a floor, not a ceiling; keeping sites usable in user agents set to a larger font-size is a worthwhile goal. Users can already set their font-size in desktop browsers but sites often have problems when they use it. Maybe when the capability is standard on mobile devices, web developers will address it more. #a11y

@zachleat I understand a recording can't really get across how loud it can be but do none of the designers or design users post audio or video clips? How loud is it compared to a regular speaking voice? How is the sound of a triple tone whistle different from others?

@chriskirknielsen Meh, I think users rarely care or think about links being "internal" or "external."

Even with the complexity of :local-link(0), :local-link(1), etc., it still can't treat example.com and www.example.com as "internal" but cwilcox.example.com as "external." @netzhexe

@chriskirknielsen I'm a little unclear on the scope of the "reference combinator."

label /for/ input is one example but would button.menu /commandfor/ dialog work to style a dialog opened using a particular button? Could [role="tab"][aria-selected="true"] /aria-controls/ [role="tabpanel"] show a tabpanel based on selection of its tab?

@sarajw@front-end.social Does the custom emoji in this font basically look the same as the same character in other fonts, e.g. a thumbs up emoji (👍) but the custom one has an extra large thumb? If so, then something like 👍 is the way to make it decorative. If the custom emoji is not equivalent to an existing emoji in the Unicode catalog, then the font should have it assigned in the Unicode Private Use Area (PUA) @pkra@bonn.social referred to. Screen readers shouldn't say anything when they encounter PUA characters, they don't have a name stored for them. @zersiax@cupoftea.social

@davatron5000@mastodon.social Suggestion: put the first within the , the `div.meta-link` second, and use CSS to visually reorder them. Headings denote the beginning of a section of content, the link belongs to that section, therefore, it should be after the heading in the reading order (I think it's okay for the link to come first in the visual order because the visual design makes the association clear). As a more practical matter, non-sighted users who navigate by heading will miss the link if doesn't come after the heading in the reading order. In this example, the same link is repeated in the first paragraph so missing the "meta" one wouldn't really be a problem but in designing a post template, you probably can't assume that will always be the case. https://daverupert.com/2016/09/super-mario-64-1996-developer-interviews/ @ashur@front-end.social

Even on smaller viewports, users should be able to increase the text size up to 200% without having to horizontally scroll. The relevant WCAG 2.2 guidelines are 1.4.4 Resize Text and 1.4.10 Reflow.

Just to be clear, while it can be helpful and often achievable, WCAG doesn't require avoiding horizontal scroll with increased text size.

Horizontal scroll needs to be avoided in viewports as narrow as 320px but only for the page as it was designed.

Users also need to be able to enlarge text at least 200% but if they have to scroll in two directions to read it, so be it; enlarging by page zoom or even by pinch-to-zoom is sufficient to meet the Resize Text criterion.
