@cyberlyra@hachyderm.io Running the Donetsk/Luhansk "local separatists" playbook, it seems like. Is there also an unusual concentration of criminals and fraudsters among the "local separatists" in Alberta?

@jacqueline@chaos.social I feel like it's a cult machine, not (just) in the sense that there is a thing that can be described as a "cult of AI" but in the sense that a singular user with a singular chatbot instance can fall into a cult-like dynamic and attendant detachment from reality. The "spiral consciousness" stuff is the most obvious and extreme example but it's present in more ordinary cases too.

@ana@starlite.rodeo I especially love the part where they're using noisy and polluting jet engines to power some of them.

@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io Mexico City is probably enough to be a trip in itself both in terms of things to see and things to eat. One random thing that I kind of love in Mexico City is that Cornish pasties got assimilated into Mexican cuisine and are called pastes and available with fillings like mole rojo or arroz con leche.

@ZDL @EugeneMcParland Part of it is that one of the explicit aims of Russia's war is the elimination of the Ukrainian language, so these things are in a sense part of the battlefield.

@sterophonick Ah that's too bad, it really does seem like for all these summer internships you need to apply by january or something

@sterophonick Maybe look into Igalia's coding experience? They do some embedded and linux kernel work. It's not quite a conventional internship but they do let you be fully remote AFAIK.

@regehr @whitequark @dotstdy @tedmielczarek Eventually the OOM killer will do its job, if there's a way to detect that that happened and move that task to the end and run it by itself that would already make my life slightly easier.

@mei@donotsta.re @mos_8502@studio8502.ca I wonder if some 8-bit equivalent of WASM would work here for verifying that programs don't access memory they're not supposed to.

@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io Mexico does offer a path to residency for digital nomad types but you need to have a certain level of income or assets. Asking for asylum is in theory possible but in practice the system is awful and would only really be an option for an American whom the US won't let back in.

@transworldexpress@milliways.social You should consider mentioning Mexico as an option, anyone with a sufficiently high income (3750/month after taxes currently) can get a temporary residency visa and thus stay in the country indefinitely. In theory if things get dire in the US, applying for asylum is also an option and if your application is accepted you get a work permit. Info on the resident visa is here: https://consulmex.sre.gob.mx/nuevaorleans/index.php/2016-04-12-19-28-49/english/temporary-resident

@tammeow You may want to look into Igalia, they might be interested in your particular skill profile. They're in Spain but accept remote workers and they do kernel and graphics stuff in addition to all the web browser stuff. Submitting an application seems actually work with them too, though it takes time.

@wren6991 @astraleureka I think the problem is not that there are no out of band control signals, it's that the response is ultimately based on input text and there's no way to reliably separate user instructions from other text.

@NiwlCraft@mastodon.art Also I suspect that decarbonizing will reduce the amount of military conflict somewhat. Not because the conflicts are over resources but because resource wealth often leads to concentration of wealth and power, leading to autocracy and autocrats love spending money on war, just look at Sudan and how the UAE pays to keep the conflict going.

@mei@donotsta.re @mos_8502@studio8502.ca You can do multitasking just fine without an MMU, you just have to trust the programs not to poke addresses they're not supposed to. This is the approach taken by 68k macs. The main thing you need is code that is position independent, something that 6502 isn't really designed for especially since zero page and stack are fixed addresses. But I think the 816 is a bit more flexible, and ez80 probably more flexible still.

@danirabbit@mastodon.online Fun fact: Chicago's plumbing code actually mandated lead pipes all the way up to the early 80s when they were banned nationwide.
