Sam Neil died. He was a truly decent person. It wasn't from the cancer he battled earlier. #RIP #celebrity #nz #inmemoriam#jurassicparkhttps://www.rnz.co.nz/life/people/celebrity/actor-sam-neill-dead-at-78

@Alice You probably know it's weather dependent. It's not always active the water has to be high enough. The dam basically full. Someone below checked. It's got inches below. Maybe wait for an atmospheric river weather system...

Is there anyone here from Putāruru? Do you use inaturalist.nz? It would be great to get a #ruru observation from there! They are a bit hard to capture in an acceptable format, though. @joncounts@mastodon.nz

https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/forrest/vignettes/intro.html

forrest creates publication-ready forest plots from any data frame that contains point estimates and confidence intervals. A single function, forrest(), handles the full range of use cases — regression model results, subgroup analyses, meta-analyses, dose-response patterns, and more.

The only hard dependency is tinyplot. forrest works with base #R data frames, tibbles, and data.tables. #rstats

Informal connections outweigh coauthorship ties in academic impact | PNAS

Mentoring and support networks, as evidenced from article acknowledgements, are a strong predictor of impact.

New paper out in *New Zealand Plant Protection* 🌾

Buddenhagen CE et al. (2026) report AHAS‑inhibitor herbicide resistance in recent Alopecurus myosuroides (black‑grass) incursions into New Zealand.

Two incursion‑linked seed lots were tested. One showed very high resistance (>10× the label rate to achieve 90% control), while the other showed reduced sensitivity. This indicates that AHAS‑inhibitor herbicides should not be used for black‑grass incursion responses in New Zealand.

Given the widespread evolution of resistance overseas, future incursions are increasingly likely to carry resistance traits. Strong border biosecurity, certified seed, avoiding seed from infested regions, and early resistance screening are critical.

@craftygardennz@mastodon.nz Cool. My grandfather was a breeder, and I recall his variety was grown out in Idaho. It requires cool nights and is intolerant of wet soils. I think the frosts are a problem at flowering. So, wetness is likely a bigger concern in NZ? Post about it 📫 if you get a harvest. I'm curious.

@conradhackett In my field, more citations are gained if the abstract summarises1 or 2 main points. I thought this was, as you say key: Many of the differences in how nonreligious identities are measured boil down to one key element—how available is the answer of “no religion” to the respondent? Consider two options: (1) An open-ended interview question like, “what is your religion?” This question format may encourage some respondents to state a religious identity that they are only loosely affiliated with . (2) A two-step question, like the one suggested by Brenner et al. (2024), which begins by asking the filter question “do you currently have a religious affiliation?”

@hendric @ITOmarHernandez The whole science sector perpetuates the idea of exceptionalism, leading to exaggerated self promotion and claims of genius and novelty in an field where hard work leads to incremental gains. Doing science and perpetual learning is the fun of it.
