@ArrestJK@mastodon.nz I don’t understand this entire dumb arse #NZFirst idea about buying back the BNZ which was pilfered from #NZ by Faye & Richwhite back in November 1992 and sold to the National Australia Bank for NZ$1.48 billion. Buying back the BNZ is estimated to cost NZ upwards of $24B NZD which is insane considering NZ already has a state owned bank - Kiwibank. Apart from this being a colossal waste of money it’s also illogical. If NZ was smart they would invest just a portion of that $24B into Kiwibank so it could compete with the Australian banks that have been ripping NZ off for decades. Also, why the hell isn’t the #NZPol govt doing all its government banking with Kiwibank instead of the Australian owned Westpac Bank?

Here's last night's sunset from Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ. The day ended with a thick easterly cloud bank across the city and Canterbury Plains but the sun did its best to peak through (spectacularly). I just uploaded my favourite two photos to Flickr. Pop over there if you want to see the full-resolution versions. https://www.flickr.com/photos/mollivan_jon/55551454051/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/mollivan_jon/55550427537/ #sunset #nz #Ōtautahi #Christchurch #photography

Here are two reminders from my bike commute today that, despite all the recent high profile hand wringing in the NZ media about e-scooters, these are not the big reason why the streets of our cities are dangerous. Of course it's all the cars. It's a choice that we design our cities like this. #nz #roads #Transport #UrbanDesign

I looked up NZ's road statistics so far for 2026. 17,635 road injuries resulting in ACC claims. 221 people dead. All just this year. Instead we're fretting about e-scooters being dangerous and needing more regulation. (Perhaps they do, but they're not the elephant in the room here.) https://www.acc.co.nz/newsroom/media-resources/road-injury-statistics/ https://nzroads.tfwelch.com/dashboard/ #CarsKill #UrbanTransport #NZ

#Franz Josef #NZ #NewZealand NZ tourist town lives with similar flood hazard as Nepal disaster James Ball 5–6 minutes A West Coast glacier town faces a version of the cascading hazard behind this week's catastrophic floods on the Nepal-Tibet border — a river capable of damming high in the mountains, then unleashing a torrent without warning https://www.1news.co.nz/2026/08/30/nz-tourist-town-lives-with-similar-flood-hazard-as-nepal-disaster/ #ClimateChange #UpheavalClimate #ClimateInstability #ClimateReversal #MassAtrocity #pollution #ecology #environment #climate

On Thursday I watched this tarāpunga (NZ Red-billed Gull) on the edge of the ocean repeatedly doing a slow shuffle dance in the wet sand. It would shuffle its feet to make a wet puddle then stop and eat whatever little invertebrates rose to the surface. Then it would do its dance steps again. Definitely full marks for style and smarts. https://flic.kr/p/2stT4kF https://www.inaturalist.nz/observations/389180275 #birds #seagull #nz #beach #Chroicocephalus #gulls #AnimalBehaviour

I also had a lovely conversation with and older lady cyclist at the supermarket. She arrived as I was attempting to strap the box to my bike, so I vacated the single cycle rack for her. We started talking about the general lack of cycle parking in #NewPlymouth and ended up discussing the Queen St pedestrianisation project, the tim-tam cycleway and the upcoming election. You just don't get these kinds of interactions traveling by car. #Bike #Cycling #Bikes #Quaxing #NZ #NewZealand

Help me launch my community playgroup to make #TeReoMaori accessible for more whanau with young children in #Wellington I have designed a curriculum to teach te Reo Māori to parents and tamariki in a playgroup. I need help to ensure the playgroup can go ahead as I at the moment, it will only be able to run it if I get enough families signing up to cover the up-front cost of hiring a room in our community centre. Please check out our Givealittle: https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/maori-language-playgroup-launch #Fundraiser #MaoriLanguage #NZ #Aotearoa #LowerHutt #Education

#NZ #PersonsWithDisabilities #NZ #NewZealand One tetraplegic man, evacuated from his home, reportedly spent the night in a police station after no hospital or rest home could accommodate him. More recently, amid flooding in Oamaru last month, one woman trying to evacuate her blind nephew and another who uses a wheelchair found floodwaters made it impossible to push the wheelchair to her vehicle, leaving them stranded https://theconversation.com/disabled-people-face-greater-climate-change-risks-and-they-can-also-help-nz-adapt-289141 #ClimateChange #pollution #environment #climate

Reviving Passenger Rail in New Zealand - A Quick Start Guide: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pcMToZeIZ0TWeIGZk5LFN47rGr1Frewa/view [20 page PDF alert, Google Drive link] This is a wonderfully aspirational document of what the NZ rail network could be, with most proposals easily achievable in a short time frame (3-5 years) and at minimal cost. Hopefully it can serve as a template for an incoming government who are actually interested in rail. #NZPol #NZ #NewZealand #Railways #Railroads #GreensNZ #GreenParty #TheFutureIsRail
