@dan_kn@mastodon.social @django@social.coop Not particularly interested in what the pope, the catholic church, or any other religious body thinks about AI. Generative AI is an unethically trained & ruinously operated, rent-seeking anti-Labor technology that, from my perspective, should be stricly curtailed if not eliminated.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social They do, in fact, see "getting staff fired" & “stealing ... work" as "plus points" & are worth the harms caused. They are not concerned about growing the economy so much as 'maximizing shareholder value' & the corresponding boost to their bonuses.

@dan_kn@mastodon.social @django@social.coop I don't see the quote from Naomi Klein as prescriptive; it's a valid criticism & a straightforward observation of what the AI companies are trying to do. Calling BS on Sam Altman's framing. Hopefully public criticism like this will lead to constraints on AI to prevent these harms, though unlikely under the current regime in the USA.

@stefan I had a watch like that as a teenager. It was fine, but it wasn’t wonderful. If they could have done what a modern watch does back then, they would have. I don’t know why you guys romanticize this stuff.

@Gargron@mastodon.social Males in the wild also seem to more frequently use overtly offensive fragrances in quantities that would kill a small horse. Must be the same dynamic that motivates them to drive loud, oversized vehicles.

@rysiek@mstdn.social This is astute. A barrel of oil has the energy of around 20,000 hours of human labor. Four barrels contains the energy output of an entire working lifetime of a person. So we pump the equivalent of 20 million slaves out of the ground every day. They imagine AI as the equivalent for intellectual labor & will make them as fabulously wealthy as oil made the original capitalists.

@thomholwerda@exquisite.social @danirabbit@mastodon.online I mean, red meat is a class 2a carcinogen & preserved meat like bacon is a class 1 carcinogen. So, cutting back isn't just good the planet & kinder to our non-human cohabitants, it lowers your cancer risk.

@danirabbit@mastodon.online So right. The funny thing I've learned is, you might *think* you could never live without some food, but the more you switch your diet to plant based the less you crave or sometimes even want animal based foods. I used to think I could never give up steak or bacon. I no longer desire either & can't even remember the last time I had them.

AI is Cthulhu & AI bros are its cult?

@AppleCiderDonut@theforkiverse.com @dgar@aus.social Because "inflammable" sounds like it means the opposite of what it actually means so it became common to use the not-actually-a-word "flammable” in its place. So much so that it became a word & they both mean the same thing. Language is definitely messy.

This is a race to the bottom & a massive, industry wide deskilling.

@nixCraft I feel like we already ran this experiment with outsourcing manufacturing in the 80s & 90s & know the result; the laid-off workers will be blamed for their own plight, left to fend for themselves. Bankruptcies, homelessness, drug abuse, & "deaths of despair" are the likely future of those affected.

@searls@mastodon.social This is an odd distinction; in 30+ years of doing professional software development I’ve never observed this kind of split. Everyone has a mix of both capabilities & interests. Some may be *excluded* from participating one or the other due to organizational quirks, but this feels like a false distinction. Also, if you believe you are “scorching through” your backlog with some AI tool, you’re probably fooling yourself & everyone who’s counting your judgement & expertise.

@mwichary I’ve written an app that can inspect & capture parts of the screen to zoom in on them. The permission being granted does permit the app to grab anything on screen. It’s honest kind of a frightening level of access & you really need to thoroughly trust any app you give this permission to.
