I live in West Germany with my wife and two little sons.

In my free time I enjoy cycling, reading (space
operas), and video games. I also like to tinker with my computer and am very facinated by NixOS.

I work as an independent developer productivity consultant, co-founded GradleX.org, and am an emeritus Apache Software Foundation member. Last but not least, I co-host my own podcast: Autoweird.fm

GitHub recently announced that starting with v2.91.0 GitHub CLI will start sending pseudonymized telemetry data back to GitHub.

https://github.blog/changelog/2026-04-22-github-cli-opt-out-usage-telemetry/

Since this is an opt-out feature, most users will have it activated without knowing it. This is unacceptable in my opinion. So I took the liberty of turning this into an opt-in, disabled by default for nixpkgs.

With the release of v2.91.0, GitHub CLI sends pseudonymous usage telemetry to help us improve the product. We want you to understand what we send and why. Why we collect…

New blog post: I've been managing my tmuxinator projects declaratively with a custom Home Manager module for over a year - and finally decided to contribute it upstream.

The post walks through the implementation and how `freeformType + pkgs.formats.yaml` make it surprisingly straightforward.

Plan to remove minIO from nixpkgs: https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/490996

minio: package abandoned by upstream · Issue #490996 · NixOS/nixpkgs

The upstream repository has been archived on 2026-02-13 and will no longer be maintained: https://github.com/minio/minio. The plan is to cut dependencies now, mark it insecure after and ideally not...

I just finished the codecrafters.io challenge for building a DNS server in Rust! Uploaded my solution to codeberg: https://codeberg.org/britter/crabdns

Getting my hands dirty and solving a real problem with Rust helped tremendously with learning the language. I wouldn't call myself an expert, but I have a better understanding of ownership and life times now.

@sparrowsion I'm running Graphene myself and that team is doing an amazing job stripping out all the crap from android and providing lots of privacy features in addition. But at the end of the day even Graphene exists at the mercy of Google... Hence I'm now looking at full FOSS solution. I ordered the new @jolla phone. But I expect app compatibility to be nowhere near Graphene.

At the end of last year I felt a little like I ended up in the hamster wheel again. I made the decision to take one week for myself in 2026 to learn something completely new.

This weeks is my personal learning week of 2026 and I'm half way through implementing a DNS server in Rust, following the https://codecrafters.io course on that topic.

@sparrowsion also if you're running an alternative ROM, some banking apps refuse to run, because they expect Play integrity checks to pass, that OSes like @GrapheneOS don't pass. So you might end up with a bank that support tap to pay via their app, but that app only runs on stock android. Honest opinion: mobile computing is a pretty big mess when it comes to privacy and freedom of choise.

Big tech companies have a track record of enshitification of products that used to be good, but as they need to make more money the products get worse.

Don't think that AI is going to be any different. After a few players have killed competition, prices will go up and the products will get worse.

@project1enigma @GrapheneOS @sparrowsion just as a data point: I migrated from iOS to GrapheneOS on Pixel 7a last year and I all my banking and insurance apps are working. There only one insurance app that doesnt allow unlocking via biometrics on GrapheneOS. So I don't see a big risk in at least trying. A used Pixel 7a or 8a doesn't cost a lot either.

@sparrowsion ah okay... so if this is just about storing tickets, you can use something like FossWallet. That's what I use. I generally try to use things that I can load from @fdroidorg.

@codepitbull we've seen similar moves with #redis and terraform although full adandonment of the project is a new qualify. I think its fine for companies to change their business model but in this case it felt kind of hostile.
