What I've been reading and thought was worth a mention. Implicitly these are all recommendations, because I don't bother listing the ones I didn't like :-)

For the fiction ones, generally I take care to avoid spoilers, except via the occasional content note.

Matthew Crawford - The Case for Working With Your Hands

Subtitled "Why office work is bad for us and fixing things feels good". It was originally published in 2009 under the title "Shop Class as Soulcraft". The retitling was for the UK market, because of people here not having the umbrella term "shop class" for things like woodwork, metalwork and fixing cars.

This was a re-read after some years, and I must say it still feels relevant! What it's saying about the satisfaction of making and fixing, and the dissatisfaction of - to use David Graeber's term -
"bullshit jobs", is if anything even _more_ true now. And it explains well the discipline of having to deal with actual reality.

As a natural result of his own work, a lot of his firsthand stories are about men and motorbikes or cars. I did think there was a strand of subtle sexism at times: not actively _dismissive_ of women, just leaning a bit on, how shall I put it? "the mystique of the brotherhood of engineers" kind of vibe. I still would probably read it again though.

Paul Loomans - I've Got Time

One of the best things I've read on making things happen in the world without treating yourself like a machine. Intuition, emotions, befriending worries, the importance of breaks even if they're only short. Not all of it was new to me, but it's good ideas put together in a holistic way, more than the sum of their parts. Several times, I noticed I was becoming physically a bit more relaxed as I was reading it!

Some of the detail-tips towards the end might need to be customised, and I think there can be circumstances where it would be difficult to put into practice what the book describes overall, depending on your job situation. On the other hand, the more hectic your life is, the more even a little bit of this flavour could make a difference.

Adrian Tchaikovsky - Shroud

If you like books where the characters are having a hard time, this is worth a look :-) Exploring far from Earth. Bleak but gloriously inventive.

Hari Conner - I Shall Never Fall in Love

Queer romance cartoon story, set in early-1800s England. Skilful pics, enjoyable plot, eventual happy endings. A coda gives references for some of the real history it's based on.

Robin Hobb - Ship of Magic

Interwoven storylines of determined people with not-always-compatible intentions. Tricky constraints of ships, weather, magic, contracts, tradition and business.

Looking forward to the next in the series, and I hope it doesn't skip too far away from this excellent lot of characters and their unfolding destinies.

Micaiah Johnson - The Space Between Worlds

Marvellous twisty fiction, where our protagonist travels between worlds in more senses than one.

Arthur Ransome - Winter Holiday

A classic, from 1933. Part of the series which begins with Swallows and Amazons. Friendship, imagination, adventure. Real-world setting, based in part on the author's own experiences: no magic, no excessively implausible plot twists.

Fascinating to re-read this one now, with telephones here there and everywhere, and reflect on how much of the story hinges on communication logistics.

Adrian Tchaikovsky - Dogs of War

Maybe one of my faves by this author so far. It's got that classic science fiction flavour of "Supposing this and this and this were true, then what kinds of situations might logically follow, and what kinds of challenges might these characters face?" And it's got a valiant dog protagonist (approximately) and some ethical complexity, plus factors I won't mention here because they'd be spoilers. Some elements I didn't like quite as much, but overall a satisfying read.

Kathleen Jamie - Surfacing

Essays from a poet, reflecting on past and present. My favourites were the two descriptions of archaeology digs. Who lived there in the past, who lives nearby now?

Adrian Tchaikovsky - Alien Clay

Science fiction, indirectly saying a lot about the world we live in now. Power, coercion, solidarity, betrayal, connection, curiosity, science.

Some things in common with "Shroud", by the same author, although a different flavour overall.

Theo Parish - Homebody

Thoughtful, ultimately joyful memoir, on a theme of figuring out who you are and how you want to live. Subtle mismatches well explained. Metaphors and real-life happenings, told in cartoon form.

Ann Walmsley - The Prison Book Club

About books and about prison, and about people connecting despite fears and differences. A friend asks Ann to help with choosing books for the book club in a men's prison, and that leads to her venturing "inside". Thoughtful, gently reflective memoir, with most names and a few details changed.

Alan Hollinghurst - Our Evenings

First-person story of life in England, in snapshot chapters from maybe the 1950s till the early 2020s. Top quality writing. If you didn't know it was a novel, it could be real.

Steve Hanley & Olivia Piekarski - The Big Midweek: Life Inside the Fall

Autobiography in engaging, undramatic style. SH was recruited on bass as a keen youngster, and stayed in the Fall for 19 years, with many other musicians coming and going under the volatile leadership of Mark E Smith. We follow along as SH learns the songs, co-writes new ones, tours, records, becomes invaluable. The band isn't always a happy crew, but I can say there was at least one place where I was laughing out loud :-) Plus bits about other bands and his family.

Mal Peet - Life: An Exploded Diagram

A boy is born in Norfolk at the end of WW2. Partly his own story, and partly his parents' and grandparents', with a few side quests into the international politics of the time, and a few twists.

It isn't autobiography, but feels enjoyably true to life: the varied flavours of this real England. I read afterwards that the author grew up in Norfolk at the same sort of time as the main character.

Torrey Peters - Detransition, Baby

Three main characters, each navigating their own & each other's unique messy humanity. Enjoyable mix of present-day predicaments and "now we find out how everyone got here" backstory. Written from the inside of the queer/trans community it lovingly and critically depicts.

Brandon Taylor - Real Life

I was in two minds about listing this book, because it isn't exactly that I _enjoyed_ it. The main character often isn't at ease, and isn't entirely being treated well. But after I finished the book, it felt as though I had visited a real time and place. Top quality writing in that way.

So, a good one if what you like in a book is being teleported into someone else's life for a while.

Margaret Wilkerson Sexton - On the Rooftop

1950s USA in a Black neighbourhood. Book chapters alternate among the perspectives of a mother and three daughters, each with her own dreams. Family, ambition, love, change, music. Difficulties, but a pleasure to follow along as each protagonist finds her way.

Anne Fine - Next to Alice

A day at school turns out better than the narrator had imagined. Short story from Barrington Stoke's catalogue for "late" readers, with two enjoyable main characters and a subtly anti-sexist flavour. (It's possibly implied to be a secondary school, although that isn't spelt out.)
