GTK
mastodon 4.7.3Official account of the GTK project.
GTK is a general purpose graphical toolkit for a wide variety of environments, from desktop to mobile platforms. You can use GTK to build beautiful applications on Linux, as well as Windows and macOS, using one of the many programming languages that support it.
Benjamin blogged about the new snapping API that landed in the main development branch, which should help applications drawing content that must be aligned to the pixel grid even with fractional scaling enabled:
The GNOME 50 run time comes with GTK 4.22, so you can now use all the new API in your applications.
Matthias has a new update for the SVG icons support in GTK 4.22: better coverage of the SVG 1.1 specification, support for animations, and improvements in the rendering pipeline to make things fast.
You can read more about it on the GTK development blog: https://blogs.gnome.org/gtk/2026/02/25/an-update-on-svg-in-gtk/
Your donations help GTK development:
- infrastructure maintenance, like CI/CD pipelines and GitLab
- community events, like hackfests for planning
- grants for targeted projects, like accessibility
If you can, consider setting up a recurring donation to the GNOME project
For the next GTK cycle, Matthias has been working on a format for symbolic icons that can be rendered efficiently by GTK, including animations; it is based on a subset of SVG with custom vendor attributes:

- GskRenderReplay, a new API for replaying render nodes
- the backdrop-filter CSS property is now supported
- GTK now relies on the settings portal under Wayland
- improved language filtering in the font selection dialog
- a new reduced motion setting, complete with media query, for controlling the amount and type of animations in widgets
