Saw this old, maybe 250 year old, #tree that came down in #Toronto near Roncesvalles and HIgh Park.
It was a far more destructive storm that happened 2 weeks ago, than people think. #ONStorm #climateChange
I left a coffee cup for scale.
This tree was probably as old as Canada.

Came across this crash scene. Someone hit several inches of sand at the bottom of the Runymede underpass between St. Clair and Dundas. They got injured.
It was not marked with any pylons, nor cleaned up after the storm.
A parking enforcement officer briefly stopped and I was shocked that they did not try to put some yellow tape or pylons. Ive seen random trees in parks encircled with yellow tape, but not here where it would have mattered.
I'd like to thank the person that was warning people at the top of the underpass. I went and found some pylons strewn about and tried to block the bike lane off.
City staff should be taught cycling, so they could intuitively understand and address such dangers.
This sand washout from the railbridge has repeatedly happened. Why was it not properly fixed months before?

With the hot weather, I'm trying to keep from wandering around and staying still, as I visit the allotment garden.
But that gives me the opportunity to notice the bees, and moths around.

Saw a Cooper's hawk having a bit of dinner tonight. Ran back and grabbed my camera.
The hawk was being mobbed by 2 robins. They got a few passes, but the hawk wasn't bothered.
Perhaps it's every 6 months, or more that I see a hawk near me. But I guess it comes down to luck as to when I look up.
This was in mid-town Toronto.

Local trees are important. Here a red-tail hawk sits high over backyards. Near Eglinton and Oakwood; not a very forested area. Stalking the local pigeons that frequent the nearby condo roof.
A ring billed gull that circles the grade school playground was trying to chase it away.

@evdelen@mstdn.ca One of the reason I like when new condos have to keep the historic facades. The building feels like it still is human scale.
Also livability is sacrificed for poorly designed automation of large service trucks. In an ideal world large condos would have small composter plants.

Saw this yellowthroat while hiking near the Glen Huron pond. It is a really pretty bird.
It was hiding in the cedar, and would come out for a brief second to examine what I was and why I was stopping. It continuously kept moving, so I had to keep shooting with the camera until I got a couple of good pictures.

Cities need festivals for people. Restaurants charging $20 for a beverage aren't affordable for the average person. That's why things like the CNE were organized; a dedicated space for people to enjoy themselves.
Canada's Wonderland came about, but that was outside of Toronto and expensive.
Over a quarter of a century later, we still don't have a functional city. Places like Queen's Quay see upwards of 100,000 users on a nice summer weekend, the area becomes total chaos, but the city doesn't care. The city would rather not have people outside on sunny days, or downtown. The city just wants you to go away.
It's not that we can't have nice things. Ask elderly people about their memories of Toronto from the the 1960s and early 1970s; organized civic spaces, an accessible CNE, functional public transit. But we can't have these things without caring and competent politicians.

@evdelen@mstdn.ca The problem is that Toronto has design guidelines for new condos, that require a tall first floor of 4.5m min. This is probably to put in a loading dock for large transport trucks.
4 old small storefronts disappear and 1 large canvorous space is left in the new building.
The character of the neighbourhood is lost, you end up with what happened at Yonge and Eglinton.

Today I was on St.Clair West, having dinner on a patio, when word came of a shooting event on Salsa on St. Clair, a street festival, held by the local BIA, just down the street.
This is the history no one will tell you about, unless you've lived in the city and experienced it. We can trace this incident back to the Amalgamation of the City of Toronto in 1998, by Mike Harris. This amalgamation crippled Toronto for over two decades; the best administrators left, and budgets shrank. The city really couldn't run large scale events, like Caravan. The final Caravan festival took place in 2004. At the same time BIAs, an institution starting to gain strength, stepped in with their own miniature festivals. But soon, with little else happening in the city, these grew out of all proportion, to hundreds of thousands of people attending them. Other civic run events and venues started to fail; like Ontario Place, and the stagnation of the CNE.

I think you might be able to buy some at HomeHardware if you look around.
Also, 1 filter might do the trick, instead of 4, lowering cost, and reducing the space/footprint. Just tape 1 to the back of the fan.

Cars aren't really cars anymore, they are designed for highways and traveling at 160km/h. We need a new word for them...highway-pods.
Within Toronto you should be able to legally use a golf cart.
Make cities about people again.

@hannorein@mastodon.social It was mostly rotted out, looked to be for some time.
Trees age out, we need to keep replanting, preferable every year. Otherwise we lose the canopy.
