I rarely read posts behind a CW, so it took me way too long to realise "mh" was "mental health" and not "Monster Hunter".

@Baa One of my first blog posts ever was precisely to address some of these points.

You will certainly not regret having your breakfast with a large dollop of Carolina Reaper hot sauce.

@evacide@hachyderm.io Brilliant talk! Thanks for sharing it and, most importantly, thanks for the vital work the EFF does.
WTF since when does the Pixel 10 have a desktop mode? I connected it to my docking station to charge yesterday and for the first time it offered me "mirrorred mode" as usual, but also "desktop".
Posting this from a windowed Moshidon on a 24" display.
Very few things in tech make me as upset as the whole concept of KNX.
Yes, let's hardwire all the "smarts" in the house and make it so even something as simple as replacing a light switch requires either paying multiple hundred Euros for a physical license key for a software that only runs on Windows or calling an electrician who already owns said license.
Let's also call it "open standard" because it's open for any COMPANY to implement (after paying the necessary licenses, of course!).

@NanoRaptor@bitbang.social Can't wait for the British version, with 3 USB ports per socket.

@NanoRaptor@bitbang.social Not really. I really like mine, for many different reasons. It's one of the few things about myself I would not change.
I started a personal project a while ago, and then the worst possible thing happened: I got it to a state that is very buggy but still kinda does what I need it to do, so now I have learned to live with the bugs and have zero motivation to fix it.
The difference in user treatment:
Google Photos: Hey, would you like to backup your photos with us? You get 15GB of storage, but you can enable this option to slightly compress your media and save some space.
iCloud: Listen up dumb bitch, we already uploaded all your shit without asking because you can’t possibly be trusted. Oh, and if you want more than 5GB, pony up!

@MartinEscardo There is a quote attributed to someone named Henry Petrosky that I think about a lot:
"The most amazing achievement of the computer software industry is its continuing cancellation of the steady and staggering gains made by the computer hardware industry."

iPad arrived today!
Gotta hand it to Tim Apple, the hardware is solid and feels very premium even though it's the absolute cheapest model.
On the other hand, coming from Android, iOS feels like a huge trainwreck. UX is a fuck. How do I navigate this shit efficiently? Why is the back button all the way at the top?!
It feels kinda like trying to use vanilla Gnome, without installing the 20 extensions that make it actually usable.

@rosey Probably overkill (also shameless self promotion), but if you're hosting your own IdP, you can integrate Tailscale with that instead.

@quad@akko.quad.moe I almost went for an older model of HPE Microserver (the cube-shaped ones) when I was looking for a new server a couple of years ago, but it was out of my budget at the time. As much as a hate HP for their crappy end-user hardware, their enterprise stuff is pretty cool.

lol can you even say you have a homelab if there isn't something zip-tied, duck-taped or super-glued together?

@quad@akko.quad.moe There are a lot more options than for Jellyfin as far as I can tell, and I haven't tried them all, but I ultimately settled on Symfonium, which is paid (I know) but by far the most complete and polished. Substreamer is pretty good too iirc.
https://navidrome.org/apps/?platform=android
For PC it basically didn't change anything for me, since Feishin supports both Jellyfin and Navidrome.
Fire Force transitioning so smoothly into Soul Eater was not something I was expecting, and it made me quite happy for some reason.
I was certain they would do the lazy kind of ending where interpretation is up to the viewer and a lot is left unresolved. But no, they showed how the world came to be, the Shinigami being willed into existence, the main cast from Soul Eater as kids. It was very satisfying.

@0xabad1dea Thanks to this post, TIL macOS calls setting the immutability flag "locking a file".

@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz At least on power banks and other portable batteries, that's very much intentional. By listing the mAh at the rated voltage of the cells (and not the actual output voltages) you get a bigger number, and big number good.
Yeah, I hate it too.

@quad@akko.quad.moe Product label: "Cutting Board".
Looking closely at small print: "Self-Cutting Board".
Oh yeah, another thing that arrived yesterday is a pair of KZ Duonic IEMs. I'm loving them so far, they're nearly as "bassy" as the Decet, but way more clear in the other frequencies. Also physically lighter and more comfortable to wear.

@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz "Oh, this power bank has 20000 mAh! I don't know what that means but it must be good!"
They finally added Override to Project SEKAI!!! And it's such a good chart too!
Way to go, Kasane 🍐to!

@quad@akko.quad.moe My (limited) understanding is the difference between SAS and SATA is mostly just protocol/signalling. I wouldn't be surprised if that exact backplane is also used on another product with SAS support.
The backplane on my server (Silverstone CS380) supports both interchangeably, and for each bay the backplane has 2 ports labelled SATA and SAS, but only the SATA port needs to be connected, even for SAS usage, since that's the primary channel. The SAS port is the secondary channel for SAS 12G.

FINALLY did the ReplayGain calculation thing on my music library and refreshed the cache in Symfonium.

@quad@akko.quad.moe Try Navidrome, it's dead simple to setup and 100% worth it. Jellyfin is OK for music, but Navidrome is made *specifically* for music.
It re-scans your library in real time whenever a file is added/updated, keeps track of files that have been deleted/replaced, and deals with metadata much better than Jellyfin in my experience.
Where's rhythm game Fedi at?
Given the amount of weir- I mean, neuro-divergent people on this network, it's surprising how I never see rhythm games being mentioned at all.
I would have expected it to be something like Sonic the Hedgehog or efficient public transportation.

@quad@akko.quad.moe It seems a bit clunky, but Symfonium supports alternative download and activation methods for de-googled devices.

But if you have the willingness, try more clients first. I was lazy and bought it because it was the first thing that worked for all my needs with minimum faff.
My complaints about iOS aside, holy shit, look at me not dropping that combo until the very end!

@iFixit@mastodon.social My most recent win is with a cheap battery-powered portable blender that got its micro-controller stuck in a weird state and wouldn't turn on anymore (and the battery would take ages to drain on its own).
I opened it (with my iFixit toolkit of course), disconnected and reconnected the battery, and it's as good as new again. Also took the opportunity to mod it (with my iFixit soldering iron ❤️) and install a USB-C port for charging, because no one deserves to use micro B in 2019+7.
