I know so many who went into software as a path to management as well, and they were terrible programmers and only needed to hang on for a couple of years before switching internal roles. If AI coding had been a thing 20 years ago they would have been all over it from day one.

@mcv @Khrys@mamot.fr The problem is that they’ve acquiesced to a poorly thought out and bad faith trial balloon of a law. So now the lawmakers know that it’s game on. The next version of the law will be even more insidious and require actual verification and do who knows what else.
If there isn’t a website called IsTheStraitOpenToday.org then there should be. It can just be a random generator - no one would know.

The hanta virus thing could not be a more text book test of pandemic response and we utterly flubbed it as a species. It was handed to us on a platter. All the patient zeros were literally contained on a ship out at sea - this was like the training area in a computer game before you start playing for real and what do we do? Let them all go off on their merry way to infect everyone they come into contact with as they jet set off around the planet. Everyone take a bow.

I truly hate AI coding and what it’s done to the industry. But, I have to be pragmatic - unless I take the leap and leave the field, I need to have some understanding and experience using it and there seems to be a lot to have to learn. Can anyone point me to any resources that are like “AI haters guide to how all this shit works so you can try to hold on to your job until retirement or death takes you”?

Not sure how all these stupid US age verification laws are going to work wrt headless servers. For example, auto scaled VMs running some flavour of Linux (for an AKS,EKS kubernetes cluster say). A new node is brought up automatically when some threshold on resources is met - what then? Does it need to be age verified before it can complete its boot up? Who verifies it? If it’s the middle of the night? What if you are an international customer in say Berlin, and your cluster is running in a datacenter in the US because it’s for a US client? Or it’s in a datacenter in the EU but it’s Azure so it’s a US entity? Are these hyper scalers going to agree some sort of dispensation with legislators to bypass this requirement for managed services? If so, would manually creating a VM in Azure or AWS or GCP or DigitalOcean require age verification at creation time? Or will the infrastructure that launches the VM get this automatically from the account profile that has already been age verified? All for what exactly? To appease some puritan view of the big scary world that they hold?

I’m self employed but I do work for a couple of clients in the UK and one of them has gone full AI psychosis and it’s disturbing how much they believe in it being able to do everything. Formerly sensible practical professionals are now prostrating themselves at the feet of Claude Code and any AI startup that offers a service that sounds like it could replace (according to the AI obsessed bosses) 90% of our tech stack.

It’s our 17 year wedding anniversary today (I’m pretty sure we didn’t trigger the tariffs, at least I don’t think we did) and we have ordered far far too much Greek food for dinner.
What is it with family always trying to gaslight my medical issues. It's NOT IN MY HEAD. I fucking wish it was all imaginary, I do - but it's not. I was just fine until I got sick at the start of the pandemic and then shortly after everything started to fall apart. I was handling the pandemic just fine emotionally - it was no big deal to me, it was just doing what I had been doing for a decade prior, working from home, keeping to myself mostly. I didn't have a breakdown like everyone else who thought it was the worst hell to not be able to go to brunch every 48 hours.
