Hey Merveillians, anyone interested in putting together Ben Eaters bread board computer?

I made the kit and loved it, but had to dissassemble it for storage and I’m not interested in doing it again.

Free to a good home (or cover the shipping if it needs to go somewhere).

Today’s metal fabrication! Three hooks made from 3/8ths round stock and some large ball bearings. First time tig welding (so cool) and bending with heat using an acetylene torch.

We worked out of my friend Matt’s shop (and he did all the tricky tig welding for us 😆)

Without light leaks camera looks much better. Still feel like I’m getting more camera shake than I expect, will try with a tripod next.

My curse continues! The lid popped off my dev tank while processing 🤦. But there’s enough image to see how things turned out. Overall I’m pretty happy. Focus seems correct, lens is sharp, camera was easy to use. I had one shot at 1/30 that definitely had motion blur, but stuff 1/60 and above worked. I might go back tomorrow with a tripod and see if I can’t get this all dialed in.

Jokes on me, the lens was WAY out of infinity focus. Ended up having to shim it but I think it’s good now and ready for a test roll!

@slyka I think if you have the files and can release them that’s a kindness. Ideally folks have everything they need to assemble themselves or use a different fab, but boy is it nice when the work is done for you already.

@kinderstampfer@mstdn.social Sure, I scan with an Epson v800 at 2800dpi. I use Vuescan and try to get it as unprocessed as possible, everything turned off. Then I do inversion, white and black balance, contrast control, and any editing in photoshop.

@avi@cosocial.ca Yes! It’s making the rounds. I hang out in a 3D printed camera discord server and a few of the cameras folks have made there are featured. :)

@bosak I can see where you’re coming from about the contrast at EL800 but I think retaining the texture of the floor tiles in EL400 helps give the bottom of the frame some interest. At 800 it feels like they’re just kind of floating.

@rek never! Most of what I’ve enjoyed was no name candies from Italy that my folks would send me while they lived in Italy. More recently I had some yummy ones in Iceland but wouldn’t be able to remember the brand. Sounds like something to keep my eye out for?

Let me preface this by saying that I am in absolutely no way an audiophile. But at the same time this pair of beautiful speakers came across my path for cheap and I couldn’t say “no”.

So now I own a pair of Dahlquist DQ-20s. The foam surrounds have failed on the woofers and I’m setting about repairing them.

I’m not sure if my modern AV amp will have enough power to drive them well. But I guess we’ll find out!

Picked up a cheap minolta autocord. I LOVE these cameras (this is my 3rd 🤦). They are small, light, easy to repair, and have an exceptional lens.

This one is in crazy good condition, maybe the nicest I’ve seen. But the focus was jammed.

It’s not unusual for these to suffer from old grease that’s turned to concrete seizing up the focusing mechanism.

The helicoids aren’t hard to get to, but it does involve removing a lot of parts so it gives us an opportunity to tour the camera a little.

So here we can see lifting off the front panel, which protects the shutter and communicates the aperture and shutter speed settings to some convenient windows at the top of the plate.

Below the plate we can see the shutter and a collection of rotating plates that communicate between the winding mech on the right side of the camera and the shutter.

The crank on the right rotates a ring that charges the shutter. Another ring communicates rotates when the shutter trigger releases and unlocks the next winding.

NOOOOOoooooo

I got my kid one of these little m-vave FM synthesizers for his birthday thinking that we could use his old casio keyboard as a midi controller. Unfortunately I think the keyboard is only midi in so far as “it will communicate midi to a computer with the right driver”

So now I’m in the market for a cheap midi keyboard. hahaha
