I collect and (digitally) restore antique/vintage photo negatives as a hobby and a bit of a side gig. Every once in a while I stumble upon something that looks like it should belong to @CatsOfYore@mastodon.social 🐱. (Probably taken somewhere in Michigan in the 1920s.)

Scanned from the original (~100 year old) glass negative. No restoration.

I don’t usually go for “altered” photos, but I found these painted cabinet cards at a local shop for $2 today… and they’re kinda fantastic.
A double exposure snapshot from the 1940s or 50s.
What an absolute potato. 🥔 (From my snapshot/photo collection.)

When cleaning a glass negative--or any photographic negative, for that matter--I generally leave the emulsion side alone, with the exception of some air-blower dusting. Every once in a while I run across a negative that is so incredibly filthy, but otherwise in good condition, that it seems worth the risk. In these rare cases, I always scan the negative before cleaning the emulsion for a bit of insurance. Here's a before and after example. (No digital edits to either.)
To be clear: I don't recommend trying this unless you know what you're doing or really don't care about the negative. The emulsion is very easy to damage.
4x5 film portrait of a burned out lightbulb. Still having some small dev issues with 4x5, but I'm happy with how close/sharp I was able to get with my Burke & James Press camera. Shot on Fomapan 400.

In case you were ever curious, this is what 120-year-old glass plate negatives look like after being shipped in a BAG (no box used). I’m going to do my best to piece them back together and scan them to at least save the images. Such a shame.

I was given this glass negative and decided to see if I could improve the state of it at all. From what I understand, it was in a basement flood and the paper envelope it was in was allowed to dry while still in contact with the emulsion. This is particularly problematic when the side of the envelope with the glue seam is facing the emulsion side of the negative. (In case this ever happens to you, remove the negatives from their sleeves *before* they get the chance to dry.)
It's never going to look great, but I think the only areas of loss were essentially gone before I started removing the paper. You can see the darker areas under the paper in the 'before' image coincide with the areas of full image loss on the 'after' image.
Given the time it took, it probably wasn't really worth the effort. But, I'd still call it a success.
Disclaimer: This isn't something I'd try unless you know what you're doing or it's a negative you don't care about.

Some shots off my first roll of Lucky SHD50 film. Stand developed in 510-Pyro (1:300 for 1hr, briefly agitated at 30min). I shot these at ISO 12... which is probably underexposing. Super-high contrast (obviously). I would not recommend stand development of any kind with this film. I was trying it with 510-Pyro to see if I could get a bit less contrast. I don't think it helped and caused some intense fogging of the base layer. This film feels a little like shooting with a deep red filter... but with even less light sensitivity.

I found a vintage (1950s?) Brumberger (up to) 5x7in contact printing box for sale locally. Needs a bit of a cleaning, but it's otherwise in great shape. These kinds of contact printers were meant to be used with now-hard-to-find, contact-printing-specific, silver-chloride papers like Kodak AZO. (As far as I know, Lodima is the only place to get similar paper... and it's not cheap.) That said, I've read that you can use modern enlarging photo paper as long as you don't mind a certain loss of control. Modern papers are several stops (at least) faster than silver chloride... so the exposure times will be much shorter.
I'm excited to experiment with it.

Ma Bell Tonka van at a local antique mall.
From now on, I will be referring to camera bellows as a “telescopic skin cavity”.

The smallest lens I own vs the largest lens I own (35mm film box for scale).
Harman released a new (creative/experimental) color film today in both 35mm and 120 called "Harman Switch Azure". The name comes from the fact that they've swapped the red and blue dye layers while leaving the sensitivity in the expected order. So, red/orange/yellow colors become shades of blue/purple in the final, positive image... while blues show up as shades of yellow/orange/red. Probably not the kind of film that everyone will enjoy, but it's nice to see new film options hitting the market (even if they are technically modifications to existing film stocks and not completely "new").
