@mcc@mastodon.social @ireneista@adhd.irenes.space @MaddieM4@raphus.social right, but an open ISA is not the same thing as being able to create silicon with said ISA, for a truly open chip, we do need people who can fabricate said silicon, is more my point also RISC-V is evolving, usually according to how big companies want it, it's not like RISC-V stood still and just froze, there's a lot of funky stuff being added to it (M-mode being my usual example, it reeks of "intel SMM" levels of mistakes personally)

@ireneista@adhd.irenes.space @mcc@mastodon.social @MaddieM4@raphus.social tbf i suspect a lot of it is that a very large amount of the tooling needed to make remotely modern CPUs and chips and such (PDKs, etc) is under so much NDA'ed lock and key (seriously, the things i've heard about this are on the border of absurd...) that you basically need %BIG_COMPANY% resources to even enter the sphere....so effectively even if the ISA is open, it's big companies who are driving the standard effectively

@MaddieM4@raphus.social @mcc@mastodon.social honestly, very fair point, was definitely something i was considering as well, and i personally would be VERY happy with a fully properly no slop open sourced GPU even if it had a limited audience and/or limited scope, GPU land has felt so prohibitively closed for so long that i'd definitely be chomping at the bits to try it out

@r@glauca.space @ireneista@adhd.irenes.space @mcc@mastodon.social @MaddieM4@raphus.social while yes, proprietary tooling is very much "the standard" right now, the fact of matter is that unless people actively work towards it, nothing is going to happen i guess i'm just one of those people that feel that even if a goal is far off, you have to start setting foundational steps even if you don't get to see the final result, so the fact that something like a field solver is even being worked on openly is better than a decade ago where there was practically zero work in that regard...still better imo

@gfaster@tilde.zone @lina@vt.social i think the issue from the programmer's perspective is that: a very large portion of users *will not care* that the implementation was slop-coded and *stolen*, only that it exists. the credit is erroneously going to go to the person who *stole* Lina's work and nearly none of the credit is going to go to Lina herself who actually did all the hard work here. programming and reverse engineering is very much a field where work being attributed and credited correctly is extremely important, especially when it comes to things like career advancement and just plain *satisfaction in one's work* so her being credited for being the one who did this work is really really important in general. (you may notice I keep emphasizing the word *stolen* here. *stolen* is the only correct word to use here, Lina published her reverse engineering work and progress out of a sense of goodwill and a desire to be transparent to her community, and the slopcoder here stomped all over that and decided to steal *her* work that this person had no right to steal, and take all the credit for it by putting it through a slop generator.)

@hellbeast@pleroma.envs.net @jernej__s@infosec.exchange @Rairii@labyrinth.zone @winload_exe@wetdry.world better once you realize that there's a very very very VERY large number of HRESULT and error codes that are completely undocumented

@SRAZKVT@tech.lgbt @dalias@hachyderm.io yes, and this is the exact reason why browsers won't adopt this, CAs probably pay browser vendors good money to ensure DANE is never supported in any serious capacity. see: how Windows kernel driver signing still requires you to procure an EV cert (remember those?) even when in the end, it's Microsoft that signs *all* modules that get loaded into the kernel these days.

@brianstorms@mastodon.social @janl@narrativ.es i think the practical reality is that AI as tooling and the AI companies leading the AI arms race are so completely intertwined at this point (and also with fascists no less), that the whole AI well (even stuff like classifiers and such, the old school stuff from a decade or so ago aren’t really trustworthy given that they’ve certainly also benefitted from the LLM boom) has been poisoned. People who legitimately care about ethics i suspect are probably going to be better off brushing up on prob-stats and drawing conclusions and connecting dots the old fashioned way, from when AI didn’t function as a serious tool.
