This Home Assistant thing is a real rabbit hole. I thought I'd just learn something like "a new Docker container", a couple of days of learning and I'd be done. My ass! HA is a freaking Swiss Army knife: I can automate even the damn toaster, and HA will help me create a new scene for it.

If you don't hear from me in the coming weeks, it's because there's no cell service at the bottom of the rabbit hole. Wish me good luck.

The average user who switches to Linux goes through several phases:

1. Oh, this is really different from Windows, I’m not really into it. Where are my damn installed programs?
2. Well, it’s not that different. There are windows, folders, and its own app store.
3. I’m still not really into this desktop. I’m going to customize it to my liking… Or maybe I’ll just try another one.
4. I’ve already tried all the desktops, I’m going to check out that WM thing.
5. I think if I remove these services, I can save a 11MB RAM.
6. I’ve recompiled the kernel. The system is 0,8 seconds faster.
7. Why use a distro created by someone else when I can make my own?
8. I hardly use the computer anymore... I just optimize the system.
9. My friends have contacted me on Matrix because they’re worried about me. I’m worried that they’ve found me. I need to cover my tracks better online.

Hey, Europeans! How are the temperatures shaping up at the end of June?

Climate change is going to really screw us all over. It doesn't matter whether you believe it or not.

Whenever I'm forced to use commercial, proprietary software, I look into open-source alternatives because I know it's only a matter of time before the company in question tries to fuck me with a random change to its terms of service.

By the way, Plex users, welcome to Jellyfin.

I had to install Windows 11 on a laptop that was running Arch Linux (don’t ask me why—I’m really pissed off about this), and it was the worst user experience I’ve had in years.

1) The laptop's touchpad didn't work; I had to use a USB mouse.
2) Windows 11 didn't recognize the M.2 drive. Why? No fucking idea. You have to download some drivers (not the typical .exe file, but their .sys, .cat, .info, etc.), insert another USB drive with them, and install them during the W11 installation process.
3) By default, it won't let you continue the installation without an Internet connection. To get around this, you have to press Shift+F10 and run a command I found on a forum.
4) After the installation drama finally ended, I’m left with a system where the laptop's touchpad still doesn't work and the Wi-Fi network card isn’t detected. I have to install the drivers manually.

"Windows is easier than Linux". My ass!

Microsoft has really screwed up. When I see users who don't have a clue about computers asking about Linux because they're sick and tired of Windows, things are looking pretty bad for the folks in Redmond.

Even though this makes me smile, I can't help but wonder, how could they mess up so badly?

You young people don't know this, but the Internet these days is absolute shit. The one I grew up with was a jungle with its good and bad sides, but today's version is almost dystopian. The damn Internet today is designed to drive you crazy the moment you open your browser. Before you even see the content, it feels like they're putting you through a poll.

Click here to let us know you're not a bot.
- Fuck that. I'm a person, not a terminator.
Do you accept our cookies?
- No.
Do you want to subscribe to our free newsletter to sell you non-free shit?
- No.
Do you agree to let us track your location?
- WTF? No.
Do you want instructions on how to use our site?
- No. If your site needs instructions, you need a new webmaster.
Do you accept our changes regarding the damn GDPR?
- Tu puta madre! Go fuck yourself.

Setting up remote access to Bambulab 3D printers that are on a different VLAN than yours is a pain in the ass.

Bambulab has chosen the wrong path. It might carve out a niche among users who aren't very tech-savvy when it comes to 3D printing (and who aren’t interested in learning either), but all of us nerds who have used their printers are going to tell them to go to hell.

By the way, if you're trying to set up remote access using pfSense or OPNsense, here's a great guide: https://nuxx.net/blog/2024/12/19/bambu-lab-p1s-on-iot-vlan/

I was watching a game via streaming on my browser, and my CPU was running at 78–80 °C (it's an old laptop).

If you inspect the page in Firefox and select the "Network" tab, you can find the video's URL. All you have to do is open that URL in mpv, and your computer will run much more smoothly and, in my case, with a CPU temperature 12 degrees lower.

I can't watch videos on a sports news website because they won't play without showing the ads first. I open the app for that website and they still won't play because I use pfBlocker-NG on pfSense to block the ads.

Deleting the website from my favorites and ditching the app in 3, 2, 1...

What a shitty Internet.

PriceGhost is a service that you can run on your server to check the prices of products on Amazon, Aliexpress, etc. at the frequency you select. In addition, if you create a Telegram bot, you can configure it to send you notifications in case of price changes. This way, you don't have to constantly check the price either in the online store or on the PriceGhost web interface. At the moment, it is running in a Docker container on my home server and works like a charm. https://github.com/clucraft/PriceGhost #selfhosted #docker

Anyone who uses Firefox nowadays does so as an act of rebellion against the Evil Corp, meaning they usually know what they're doing and why. However, Firefox is heading in a different direction and isn't listening to its user community.

Want to know what they want for their browser? Ask them. You can do this through market research or a damn online survey. It's not that hard.

OpenClaw goes rogue on Meta exec, deletes emails without permission https://www.thedailystar.net/tech-startup/news/openclaw-goes-rogue-meta-exec-deletes-emails-without-permission-4113741

"Nothing humbles you like telling your OpenClaw 'confirm before acting' and watching it speedrun deleting your inbox. I couldn't stop it from my phone. I had to run to my Mac mini like I was defusing a bomb".

Allowing AI to access and manage your email seems incredibly irresponsible to me. If this is being done by the Director of Alignment at Meta Superintelligence Labs, I don't even want to think about the damage AI could do to people without computer skills.

In Spain, solar energy generates as much electricity as 27 nuclear power plants during the day. This is leading to increasingly lower electricity prices.

In Spain, every now and then, we get things right... And not just when it comes to food and wine ;)

When I build a website, I always focus on the backend first, making sure everything works. I always start with the most difficult part and leave the frontend for last because, in theory, it's easier. And it's always the same: 25% of the time is spent on the backend and 75% on the frontend. How is this possible? JS and PHP are really tough, and HTML with CSS is a piece of cake, right? Right?!

Maybe many others didn't know either. An announcement on the linux.pizza channel would be a good preventive measure.

I'll be getting my main laptop back soon, on which—for reasons that aren't relevant here—I've had to temporarily install Windows.

Now I'm faced with the dilemma of choosing a distro. Since my ThinkPad runs Arch Linux, I'm wondering if it's time to reinstall Fedora.

What I do know for sure is that it's time to give Wayland and Hyprland a try, after years of using i3wm.

Does this tune sound familiar? I'm sure it does... It's from the original Doom's Gate game. A song that all of us who are starting to get gray hair recognize almost instantly from its first few chords.

I'm sad to share the news that its illustrious creator, Bobby Prince, has passed away at the age of 81.

Wherever he is, he'll know that his music was and will always be a part of our lives.
