On politics. Most of my focus every day is political, more or less; and am glad to connect with folks offline. I do not do a lot of political posting on social media principally for my mental health. As a Jew, I do post in opposition to Israel's ongoing genocide against Palestinians.

@gknauss@mastodon.social To say why a little more clearly: $1Tn is markedly more $ than it would cost to buy the entire agricultural output of the United States in a year (est $624bn in 2024, wholesale). One person obviously doesn't care to eat all that, and it means the mechanisms for determining how we spend our inputs (labor and natural resource) are becoming warped on the demand side. Money wants rocketships instead of food... and so that is what we as a society spend our inputs on. Potentially creating effective poverty - worse living conditions due to decreasing supply, due to warped demand.

Sometimes not even the writer! I was listening to an audio edition of Naomi Novik's "Buried Deep and Other Stories" and she has some choice comments up front implying that the editors made her write little intros to each story about what she was thinking, and she did, but they are bullshit - she doesn't really remember, and please just enjoy the story ...

@davidsuculum@mathstodon.xyz I wonder if there's a bit of a blind spot where physics geniuses like Carroll may not realize that phi sci and metaphysical questions may need to be approached quite a bit differently than physics questions. His stand on "brute facts" seems to me to reflect a blind spot like that; and similarly Krauss in A Universe from Nothing, where he Krauss ends up relying on a multiverse+anthropic principle that doesn't really answer the question.
