Aspiring writer, internet enthusiest, political activist, and learning how to code.
This will be my political and news account, to keep my feeds clean on the other instance. That said, I should be rather active on both accounts so reach me where ever.
@objectrecycler@woof.tech actually, it is the opposite end that I look forward to using more. Receiving text messages and being able to respond quickly!
@proficiency@mastodon.social It's a cool phone. I can see that it only has 3 GB of ram and 32 GB of eMMC internal storage. Also, it wasn't part of the initial post, Fossman specified their cousin's laptop, not a phone.
Anyways, just because it can run the software at that low of spec, doesn't mean that should be the target for a mostly PC desktop. Reducing system requirements should be a goal as much as possible, but at such a low target, you are hitting a small minority of devices at that point, in which only enthusiasts or those without means are using those devices.
If enthusiast phone manufacturers are using Phosh as their target, they could do a better job at providing their users with a bit more resources to use the given software. I wouldn't pin that responsibility on the work of volunteers.
@opensourceopenmind@social.vivaldi.net That's a pretty big ask. GNOME is a modern desktop that continues to get improvements with modern hardware in mind. You have my sympathy of course, you gotta use the hardware you got access to, but I think sticking with the projects that have that low memory are going to always be your only option for that machine. 3 GB of RAM is basically nothing. Maybe you can achieve a minimal install with Arch to get that memory usage lower, but I can't see how that could be feasible.
Maybe SwayWM might provide something a little more modern while still lightweight?
@Doomed_Daniel@mastodon.gamedev.place For now I am content using Waterfox. It's probably got its own issues, but the maintainers seem to be firm in their stance to exclude AI bullshit which is all I could really ask for. I'd like for Epiphany to have better extension support but that's probably still years away.
July 22nd will be one of the most traumatizing days of my adult life, and I probably wouldn't be safe in a hotel right now if it were not for the kindness of strangers around the small town of Waterville Washington.
I moved to this state in the nicest car I've owned since becoming a driver, a 2015 Ford Fusion. I drove the I-95 and the I-90 to get here from my childhood state of Wisconsin. Aside from feeling some trouble getting up mountains, I never had any issues until today, when trying to get up a mountain pass I repeated got overheating warnings. I did not prepare any coolant but picked some up once I let the car cool down for 30 minutes. As I continued, I once again had issues just trying to get up the damn mountain and had to pull over around 5 times.
If I did not have a couple of dudes in a truck show up, teach me what to look for in an overheating issue, I probably would have been struck on that mountain going well into the night. Not only did they address my issue, we discovered it is likely a faulty sensor, but still a scary warning to someone who has never had such a warning before.
They followed me up all the way up the mountain to make sure I had no more issues, and going down the mountain to Spokane had no further issues.
One could argue that this is a non-issue in hindsight, but I am afraid of getting in that car again to get back home. This was traumatizing. I am not okay.
I usually just glance at these, but I find a lot of these changes incredibly exciting. I can't wait to try some of them out: including the screenshot keyboard controls along with the extensions being advertised.
I use Obsidian for my world building notes, and someone tossed the name Joplin around.
Part of me is curious about switching. I want to use more open source tools in general. That being said, Obsidian treats me so well, and the way I can link page-to-page has been a Godsend.
Holy shit, I SLEPT on KDE Connect. I've had it installed for awhile, but I just tinkered with the settings and I think this will be a game-changer for myself!
What is the best search engine to be using right now if you want to support FOSS and not have any of that AI shit, or at least a very minimal amount of it?
It really isn't worth arguing about AI usage and its damage on Reddit, is it?
At least I think I made my point across. I'm definitely done with the conversation myself.
@Dustwin@mastodon.social What I found when I was looking around was that Pistachio was about half the environmental impact of almonds in terms of water consumption, and are grown in a higher variety of places. https://biologyinsights.com/are-pistachios-bad-for-the-environment/ The biggest issue right now with almonds is that they're almost all grown in exclusively drought-driven areas and require lots of water that isn't rain.
Oat and Soy are definitely better alternatives to Pistachio's though, cannot deny that. The main thing I remember about soy is how too much consumption can lead to health risks. https://scienceinsights.org/is-too-much-soy-bad-for-you-risks-and-safe-limits/ I have yet to experience any issues, and I do like the taste of soy the most, but it is something to consider. I think a rotation of different alternative milks is the best practice an individual can make, and all of them, including almonds, are better than dairy.
