@joannaholman could try saying something like - Are you having a small wedding? Often a bit painful if you are in the family but not seen by them as close family!

Interesting article in the Economist - English channel quite important for global trade - more than you might think- well more than I thought! The nightmare scenario for global trade

Great to see #HelenSharman on the BBC - thoroughly recommended her book about her launch to the space station funded by interfora & Gorbachevs Russian gov when the UK gov pulled out of funding her place won in a competition. Also as 1st British astronaut she was forgotten till fab Tim Peake was selected for the ISS & found he wasnt the first UK astro. Helen was asked to order an interflora delivery to her boyfreind from ISS space. But he ditched her in astro training so sent them to her mum!

@wood5y@mastodonapp.uk Yes this is so obvious - already most of the admin work already takes place over the road in the new building. Its mad to think a building is more important than the organisation of democratic society. A building can prevents democracy. When I was a teen one of my freinds worked in the whips office and said they only recruited men at the time because if the stays overnight in the same cramped office. Lets move on! Build 2 fab buildings 1 north and 1 south. Dual assembies.

@duanegran Of course riding your bike in some parts of the UK is probably not s good health choice due to lack of infrastructure particularly if your councils aren’t too keen on cyclists. Just walking round some town is still a bit of a challenge to your health too traffic wise..

@helenczerski when there iw a clear lack of teachers in certain subjects the government should fund the teacher training - it has been very difficult to get foreign language teachers eapecially at A level - its amazing we have dropped foreign languages in education which is a vehicle for teaching about humanity and difference. Without the tougher subjects like physics & philosophy it makes the UK educated population less ready for the global workplace and the future challenges.

@petergleick@fediscience.org Actually on this topic- it is enormously time consuming to get a patent accepted. For some best inventions its just kept secret rather than risk exposing the design. How many AI algorithms will be allowed to trawl patent libraries -is this why powers are not keen to protect personal digital artistic/cultural property? as its not possible to respect the patent laws either.? Will there be tools able to answer some of this digital data ownership/hosting challenge?

The machines are fine. I'm worried about us.

On AI agents, grunt work, and the part of science that isn't replaceable.

@glyph Great post - defs going to be a quicker cycle than the arrival of the internet which there was such a great hope for before the big manipulations- Must be lessons learned from things like Twitter where governments and institutions use tools for free, and didn’t supervise what was done with their data & peoples info. Can really there be respect for national borders, laws or sovereignty inside opaquely managed global tools and now I am such a sparrow!

@petergleick@fediscience.org Slightly bizarre statement as surely this would completely negate the patent industry. Producers of technical diagrams and documents used to make products generally need consent to use them - not clear why musicians and artists should not expect the same consideration.

@pluralistic@mamot.fr Yes in order to have integrated AI into everyday processes replacing employees inside a business- AI tooling is too recent. Critical Internal processes are often held together by a few key people and depend on smallish datasets that doesnt need AI to manage. More likely there are downturns. External expensive consultants may find valid AI use cases which result in advice on internal layoffs of business expertise-but this is not replacement by AI more like a power grab.

@woe2you@beige.party @ahltorp@mastodon.nu I first came upon scrum under “extreme programming” -we used it when things went wrong in emergency-replacing the weekly team leader meeting with daily stand-ups -mainly to demonstrate to managers we were working even when we weren’t typing - what they thought we should be doing -not the talking.about requirements which was the real necessity. Management never truly trusted thinkers -hence the lines of code then the burn down- then the tickets-trust zero
