@dangoodin@infosec.exchange I looked at the first one and although I don't know the codebase at all so am missing context, I think I understand it partly (I am a good c++ programmer ) and it certainly looks real to me. There is also discussion on the bugzilla where a developer acknowledges they introduced the bug when doing code cleanup.

@mhoye I skim read it. I'm not totally sure if the solutions are proven exact from algebraic identitied or what. The prose parts feel like slop-- the author admits to this but... For instance I didn't see any derivation for sin(x).

@lachlancooper@mastodon.social I think sometimes about how one of the biggest constraints on GB in particular is the small screen size + low resolution. E.g. comparing Zelda LTTP with Links Awakening. LTTP is pretty densely laid out but LA suuure takes that up a notch! Really interesting and powerful constraint.

@nothings@mastodon.gamedev.place Also it's interesting to me: I can't think of a game *other* than Ultima VI that does floodfill visibility. (Except like Ultima VII, and maybe VIII which I haven't played, I guess...)

@lachlancooper@mastodon.social @jplebreton@mastodon.social I'm glad this was an interesting read-- it's really satisfying to know. Also: I didn't know about these GB ultima games until now. I am *super* intrigued by the design choices they made, who developed them, and so on. Thanks for the reply :)

@kayserifserif@sunny.garden acquiring physical objects sometimes has little fun adventures associated with them, that I like (e.g., just got a Henry James book at the library. I liked it there!) but I think e readers are great too! (I have used one only a bit but I liked it!)

@jorendorff @mhoye ah! I was wondering how you got a cyclic function out of ln and exp. I am not superstrong at math-- I just like it :) The core idea does seem pretty cool. The paper is annoyingly wordy in a slop-machine-wrote-this way-- the author discloses as much. Lately I have been thinking about how functions (e.g. sin()) are actually implemented (did some baby level numerical integration stuff lately which made me curius.) Also wonder: is this idea similar to Taylor polynomials?
