MMMMMMMMMMMM… Microgramma is a squarish sans conceived to remain legible at very small sizes – hence the name. It was drawn by Alessandro Butti (1893–1959), director of Nebiolo’s Studio Artistico, and first cast in 1952, in five all-caps styles. Aldo Novarese – first Butti’s assistant and then his successor – subsequently reworked the design into Eurostile (1962), adding lowercase characters.
Over the weekend, we added three Uses of Microgramma. @drj@typo.social’s Bug-Byte contribution pushed it over the mark: this classic is now a member of Club 💯!

We’d like to thank the good folks of @RTypography@typo.social for supporting Fonts In Use as a sponsor.
Visit the Porto-based type foundry at https://www.r-typography.com/ and check out their latest double release: Mild Grotesk is “an unobtrusive sans-serif that bridges the gap between Neo-Grotesque rationality and humanistic warmth”. Soft Grotesk is its rounded counterpart. Both come as variable fonts with axes for weight and optical size.
Cheers to @typotheque@typo.social, a Fonts In Use core sponsor since 2024!

“What do you dream about?” is a typographic list of different types of #dreams. The book was made by Tim Bauer, Marei Hager, and Jennifer Treacy as a student project at HS Mainz. Sixty years ago, in November 1963, #MauriceSendak published his now famous #ChildrensBook, Where the Wild Things Are.
Did you know that the casual letterforms on the first edition #BookCover aren’t custom drawn, but type? They stem from an obscure #font named Safari which came with numerous alternate glyphs. Patrick Concannon put together a post about the #design, and @jaykay109@mstdn.social tracked down the origin of the #typeface. “Koalicje wody / Coalition of Waters” is an exhibition that was shown last year at the Baltic Gallery of Contemporary Art in Słupsk, Poland. Karolina Pietrzyk and Tobias Wenig designed the posters and other printed matter using KTF Prima: https://fontsinuse.com/uses/72588/koalicje-wody-coalition-of-waters
@anfalov@typo.social started work on this neo-grotesk during his studies at ECAL. It’s an interpretation of Nebiolo’s Forma, designed 1965–68 by a team of eight designers under the direction of Aldo Novarese. After years of being in development, KTF Prima was released this week with Kyiv Type Foundry.
Tired of the same old #fonts?
In the past seven days, we added 64 new Uses to the Collection at https://fontsinuse.com.
Between those, 28 #typefaces were documented for the first time.
These debutants include old and new designs. Intrigue and Magister go back to the 1960s. Some incl. Aconchego, Grez, Hublot, Terza Display, and Tid came out in the past 12 months. Yet again others are unreleased (EB George) or proprietary (Haut-Bailly, TR Supply Gaskessel, Sommerro Sans).
This Saturday, we published a batch of Uses for typefaces with horizontal contrast, i.e., thick tops and bottoms. In particular, there’s:
• the classic Zipper (Bob Newman, Letraset, 1970)
• the lesser known Sintex (Aldo Novarese, VGC, c.1970)
• the downright obscure Kangaroo (Dave West, PLINC, c.1969)
• and the OG, Gothic Bold (Hamilton, 1889).

Tom Carnase’s Bernase Roman in early use for “Make America a better place”. The campaign for the Peace Corps was designed in 1968 by Bernie Zlotnick at Young & Rubicam. Copywriting by Mort Redner, photo by Carl Fischer.

Contributor Garrison’s compelling theory: this might be Bernase Roman’s original use (it was officially released by ITC in 1970), and its name is a portmanteau of Bernie Zlotnick + Tom Carnase.
“Kertész – Lartigue. Un pas de côté” is the catalog for the eponymous exhibition at Espace Richaud, Versailles, in 2023. It presents works by two pioneers of modern #photography, #JacquesHenriLartigue and #AndréKertész.
Design by Clémence Michon using Persona (@abyme@typo.social) and Louize Display (@205TF).
