@AkaSci@fosstodon.org That's why we had a treaty with Iran that required them not to enrich uranium to weapons-grade levels of U-235. Iran was adhering to that treaty until "He Who Must Not Be Criticized™" decided to trash the treaty.

Reagan's hawkish Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger said that these six tests should be met before the U.S. launches a war. How many were met before Trump started his war of choice with Iran?
1. The United States should not commit forces to combat unless the vital national interests of the United States or its allies are involved.
2. U.S. troops should only be committed wholeheartedly and with the clear intention of winning. Otherwise, troops should not be committed.

Voting to authorize military force is one of the most serious decisions Members of Congress can make, and we must be willing to fulfill this constitutional duty in deciding when America goes to war.
For decades, Iran has funded terror around the globe, including against Americans and our allies. The Iranian regime has refused to dismantle its nuclear program despite repeated U.S. efforts at diplomacy, and Iran’s ballistic missiles are a major threat to regional and global stability.

In the chaos it could definitely happen, and then we have a major national security issue. Do an internet search of Defense Secretary William Perry's nuclear nightmare to get a sense of what could happen. To me, this should be priority #1.
