And with proper software support, you can get ~880 KB out of usable space with a FAT12 file system on 3.5“ DD disks (1 MB raw capacity): • Hyperformat on the ST pioneered this (Claus Brod, Jürgen Stessun) • Bitte ein Bit (Uland Täffner) • FCopy Pro (Martin Backschat) • FDFORMAT.EXE (Christoph H. Hochstätter) Which software did you use back then and now to increase the efficiency of your diskette media?

@kalleboo@bitbang.social @paulrickards@mastodon.social I wish they would have named or upgraded the first digits of the macOS version number only when significant additions were made. Like, when they added Spotlight. Or Time Machine. Or 64 Bit. But not for “the app that’s bundled with the OS got some improvements in a special section” …

The Death of Community Memory

I recently spent forty minutes searching through Slack trying to find a technical decision — made eight months ago — about an app that 60% of my creative life depends on...I eventually gave up and just asked someone to explain it again, which they did, poorly, because they didn’t quite remember either.

@everythingalsocan@techhub.social Yes, indeed: VGA Copy 5.3’s documentation states that VGAREAD.EXE is used under DOS to work with “special format” disks, like 1.72 MB 3.5“ HD, or 820 KB 3.5“ DD. This seems equivalent to FDREAD.EXE from »FDFORMAT«. https://archive.org/details/vgacp530

@sverx@mastodon.gamedev.place I assume some logic behind the “4D”, and that this media set is rather old (unfortunately no date on it). In the early 80ies, there were … • 40-track-3.5“ drives • Single-sided Like the Epson SMD-110, with 67.5 tpi. That’s either 82 KB (FM) on a 3.5“ disk, or 164 KB (MFM). If you now double both the tracks (40 to 80), and go from FM to MFM (doubling again), you end up from 1D to 4D. Or, what we nowadays call a “normal” 3.5“ DS/DD disk drive, with ~720 KBytes. In the attached image, the SMD-110 is to the very right. A “normal” 3.5“ DD drive is to the left, an Epson SMD-140. (And yes, the SMD-110 is not vaporware, we have a working one in the club)

@dymaxion (Now) Elderly women co-invented the internet. Invented higher level languages. Wrote the software to go to the moon. And … Don‘t assume old people can not do something. They may have invented the stuff you‘re working with. And whether they had or raised children doesn‘t matter, again, when talking about technical achievements.

@ipaschke There are plenty of “non-wild” memory expansions for the Atari ST to get beyond the 4 MB barrier: Storm ST, MonSTer, Magnum ST, PAK+FRAK, TwiSTEr. You can still buy Storm ST, MonSTer and TwiSTEr. Each of them offer at least 8 MB of contiguous memory, on top of the ST’s original amount. Some also include an accelerator. #twister #atarist https://wiki.newtosworld.de/ (bottom section)
