@ambientspace@cloudisland.nz @kkremitzki@mastodon.social @nyrath@spacey.space It seems pinks and yellows were popular to use when shooting in black and white to get the desired grey tones: https://www.reddit.com/r/VintageTV/comments/1mv10yz/here_are_two_pictures_of_the_addams_family_main/#lightbox

@johncarlosbaez @dpiponi I made it very far in and around mathematics without seeing (or at least remembering or appreciating) that Euler sum to get -1/12. Then I saw everyone losing their minds when Joe Polchinski's String Theory book came out and it just stated it as a fact and continued on. My guess is that book was what spurred the creation of the many oft-cited YouTube videos that followed.

@mattblaze The pictures aren't very great, but I found this web page (including a picture of the facility that was used on the cover of the local phone book!): https://w3.the-kgb.com/dante/military/milpics7.html

@FediFollows@social.growyourown.services Few more updates. astrodon.social closed down, so new URLs for some on your list: European Southern Observatory: @esoastronomy@mastodon.social Naztronomy: @naztronomy@universeodon.com Kelly Lepo: @KellyLepo@scicomm.xyz Dr Jürgen Knödlseder: @jknodlseder@mastodon.social John F. @johncarlosbaez My comment was partly tongue-in-cheek, but I did actually check the link. My dissertation was about galactic cosmic ray electrons. It was written in the mid-nineties and I'm pretty certain it doesn't exist in any digital format I generated, which would have been PostScript. I vaguely recall having to provide proof-ready paper copies that were sent off to a company (UMI Microform) to be converted to microfiche. I can find it online, however. There is a company, ProQuest, that has a digital copy posted online that was made from scanning the UMI microfiche. It's a direct scan, so it not only has my copyright on the title page, but it also has a copyright statement from UMI saying "this version was created with permission of the copyright holder."

@mttaggart@infosec.exchange But real wisdom is only achieved when one opens themselves to the possibility that they themself may be the internet idiot.

@res260 @huitema @dangoodin Privacy and safety are the entire reason I use blockers. Block trackers with something like PrivacyBadger and you'll see that it isn't about serving ads, but collecting your personal information and tracking you across all of your devices. I'd have a tiny bit of respect for them if they would just own up and say something like "If you want to access our site, you need to let us collect your personal information and sell your data."

@standupmaths I really enjoyed this book!

@DavidNapoli I assume you want to stop Johnson Rensselaer from doing something? 😀

@dangillmor@mastodon.social Remember when Jayson Blair got dragged over the coals and fired for making up interviews and quotes? I think we're quickly sliding down that path with LLMs, but it will now be acceptable, or at least non-fire-able, because they are all using LLMs to write stories now.
