Reading post: « Git mirror and #Nix flakes – a practical approach to supply chain security »

🤔 I’m not convinced that mirroring is “the Right Thing” here; it sounds to me as some “worse and holed is maybe better”.

Instead of mirrors for tackling the upstream troubles, it seems more elegant to have an archive that collects all the public code and then fallback to it when needed.

Guess what? #Guix does that using #SoftwareHeritage!

« Don’t trust, verify » by #curl author – must-read!

« Software and digital security should rely on verification, rather than trust. I want to strongly encourage more users and consumers of software to verify curl. And ideally require that you could do at least this level of verification of other software components in your dependency chains. »

🤔 It reminds me « Identifying software » #Guix blog post. 🤩

Check them out!

Read on #Guix science channel about #Bazel:

« The offending upstream commit is here: github.com/tensorflow/tensorflow@e85860e838

There is no way to build Tensorflow without a bundled Python toolchain. The only way I see is to trick it into "downloading" our provided Python toolchain from a file:// URL.

I find this battle against upstream's approach towards reproducibility exhausting. »

🤔 Could you stop to say: “yeah Guix is great but I don’t use because it doesn’t provide what I need”…

…and instead explicitly say: “my research outcome is more important than doing it correctly”.

@raito I agree. This is what I’ve tried to express with the second point: « Guix is like the indian Dabbawala service using “barecodes” everywhere. • About downloading from SWH, it’s straightforward.

• About loading inside an isolated environment, well manifest.scm file might provide complex Scheme code dealing with package transformations or inferiors. So, I don’t know if it’s doable or wanted.

@raito Indeed there is often a mismatch between what users expect and tools tackle. I think, both Guix and Nix, are often “unclear” on this topic. Somehow, reproducible builds is maybe not the first wagon about supply chain security. Moreover, about Guix and supply chain security, I sometimes feel the same situation as 42 long and complex password written on a piece of paper close to the keyboard. 😉 @luj
