We just concluded a primary election here in California. It seemed to be a bigger deal outside of California than in. Lots of folks online (and not in CA) were getting heated about the governor primary, and here in the state, it was a pretty boring election.

@APBBlue@thepit.social makes sense. was just wondering if there was a particular anti-microbial agent you avoid.

Just completed another loop around the sun—almost to the minute of this post!

I'm celebrating my crawling through a cave this weekend. Party on.

@lemay@mastodon.social I regret not taking a photo at the time, but the flavored water dispenser in the office once kernel panicked, and I got root access to the android subsystem.

@mactunag@gts.eunach.scot read somewhere that the Scottish Parliament may have approved a referendum for Scottish independence. Is that true? And what does a referendum mean? What are your thoughts? (If you care to answer, a valid respond is to tell me to google it)

2) Professional has a band they adore. Using Claude Code, he quickly coded up a website to track and follow their latest tour, including dates, track lists, "SEO-compliant" (I don't know what that means), venue maps, etc. He was really impressed with the iteration speed with which he was able to create this fan site. He closes with a clarion call to designers to learn these tools in order to shape their future. \3

1) Exec says that he doesn't look at code anymore. In that, he means that he still performs code reviews, but doesn't write code from scratch. When broached about how he errors in errors in the code he does review (and admits there are always errors), he pivots to asking how would testing tools have caught this if a human didn't. If the testing didn't or couldn't catch it, it's a problem with the tests. Furthermore, testing tooling is garbage RN, and exists only to check boxes. \2

In (1), the exec admits that he's terrible at code review—or the code review process is terrible, same difference—and the solution is better tooling, which doesn't exist. In (2), the professional created a fan website rather quickly. Did I miss something? Neither of these folks made a compelling case to adopt AI. In the former, it's less how great AI code is and more how terrible our processes are. And in the latter, we have a nifty website. \4

There is nothing that I (or anyone) can design that uses an "AI" agent that will materially make my job easier, make the company more efficient, or reduce costs. I was kvetching with my therapist about my conundrum. I don't want to lose my job or not be seen as a "team player”. I only recently got this job after being laid off from the last one. I've been laid off SIX TIMES. It doesn't get easier. Each time it happens, I wonder if this is the layoff that I don't bounce back from. (2/5)

Everyone keeps talking about how "AI" makes their code better, but all I see it do is make mistakes. And so what that it wrote a program for you. You still had to edit it because it didn't work at first. AND it's theft. Someone somewhere already wrote that. It didn't come up with anything new. You were just to lazy or stupid to figure it out yourself or ask a human for help. Instead, you burned the planet so the plagiarism machine could chunk out someone else's labor for you. (4/5)

@caroline@chaosfem.tw @erl@chaosfem.tw I have read—but cannot confirm—that monkey at the time of the original Margaret and H. A. Rey publication (~1941), monkey was a synonym for all simians including apes and only later came to be exclusively used for non-apelike simians.

#introductions are for chumps. Here's a game of Two Realsies and a Whopper instead.

1. I've taken a baseball bat to the face. Twice!
2. I've been propositioned for sex in a rest-stop bathroom.
3. As a teenager, a priest lovingly massaged my feet while singing to me.

I feel like the occasion of #ConvictionDay should be a national holiday. Maybe like GuyFawkes Day in the UK?

I am not a great composer (nor a violent man), but I was thinking of writing a short #bagpipes tune to commoriate. If I do it (lack of skills not withstanding) what should it be?

@RickiTarr@beige.party Best male hair is Benjamin Sisko IMNSHO. For female characters, there are too many to count. ST girl hair is the best.

As for me? Barclay? Who has male pattern baldness?

Finally! I can reveal what I was lying about! It was "Hit in the face twice with a baseball bat"

I've only been hit in the face ONCE with a baseball bat. But I have taken a pole to the face twice.

The first time it was a tetherball pole (the kind they used to cement into tires so it was mobile and teetering). Five stitches to my seventh-grade forehead.

The second time was a baseball bat. It bounced off the ground while I was playing catcher. Seven stitches in my ninth-grade chin.

@conradhackett@sciences.social But since religion (esp. Evangelical) tracks so closely with politics, I argue it's hard to disentangle them. And that we shouldn't try to, either.

I know the point of the research isn't to judge, but I judge these reality deniers harshly. Their entrenched beliefs are destroying the world and preventing good policy that will preserve the Earth for my children.

@gwynnion@mastodon.social My radical philosophy only acknowledges a person's actions. Their inner thoughts are meaningless to whether I judge them as a good or bad actor.

Actor, that's the word I'm going to use for moral agents.

Today, I discovered that I have a #PeacockTV subscription bundled with my ISP package.

Anything good to watch on that streaming service? Nothing jumped out at me off the bat.

@jalefkowit@octodon.social I love everything about this. I have absolutely zero notes. Once Alan Thicke was announced as a host, I was pumped and ready!

Omg, the hair, leotards, the vapid soundtrack.

And the sponsor!

This is pure distilled nostalgia injected right into my veins.

I just spend over an hour trying to get the page numbers to reset in a #Microsoft #Word document, so that page 1 began on the second sheet. I did it, finally, but if asked to repeat (which I'll have to do in about a month), I don't think I'd be able to replicate my work.

@charliejane@wandering.shop To the best of my understanding, what-aboutism isn't a real logical fallacy, but relative privation is. But the former is a colloquial stand-in for the latter.

But this is not a case of relative privation. TERFs are terrible because they prioritize hurting transfolks instead of promoting feminist causes. That is, there is no general welfare that is advanced by being a TERF. We are rejecting the TERF argument not in favor of a more important one, but an actual harmful one.

My therapist had an idea. What if my #AI contribution is some kind of guardrail that keeps “AI" from damaging the company? I told her that the two times "AI" was foisted on my so far, it was wrong, and I had to fix it. (3/5)

@celesteh@hachyderm.io Seems on-brand. Does the UK have something like the (odious) Religious Freedom Act like we have in the states? The RFA was written to protect the hegemony of Xtianity, but occasionally it's successfully invoked to protect minority religions.

@openrightsgroup The Purpose of a System is What is Does. I have a philosophical ethic for which this concept underpins all moral meaning. It’s unpublished and probably problematic, but it helps clarify so much when we remove “intent” from our understanding of other moral actors.
