A photo of me doing a reading probably in like 2005-ish? A bit low-res, sorry.
Anyway, my latest newsletter is about how I'm both an extrovert and an introvert, and the extrovert/introvert dichotomy is fake.

I've read a bunch of books lately where the main character is a trainwreck who hooks up with tons of people.
That's totally fine.
But here's my plea: Can we occasionally see happy sluts who hook up with tons of people because they enjoy sex?

"The notion of making a living with A.I.-generated books appears to be predicated on the belief that algorithms will be serving up book slop the same way we are force-fed other kinds of slop."
I'm still not over losing my job as a book reviewer. Here's why we need book critics:

Just amplifying what I told io9 BTW:
- I'm aiming to write a newbie-friendly comic, no deep lore
- This'll be a fun science fiction comic about artificial consciousness and strange worlds
- Lots of identity crises, ethical dilemmas, chosen family
"I love a good infodump — but you can also sneak in a lot of details about the world through having the characters have differences of opinion about it. Anything that creates friction will stick in the reader’s mind."
My latest newsletter is about how to use your characters' POV to reveal more about their world:

Back in 2020-2021, I wrote a book about how to survive scary hard times by writing your own stories and getting lost in the imaginary worlds you create.
I feel more than ever that making up stories can help save us and keep us whole.
So this feels like good timing: Never Say You Can't Survive is just $2.99 in ebook formats for just one day.

My novel Lessons in Magic and Disaster is just $2.99 in all e-book formats today. (Kindle, Kobo, Nook, etc)
This is the book of my heart. It's a queer mother-daughter story about healing and forgiveness. It's got 18th century lit, riot grrls, and filthy weird magic.

"I would like to throw the concept of low stakes and high stakes into the nearest volcano and never speak of these concepts again. Rather, I would like to talk about stakes that are near or far."

My mother-daughter witch novel Lessons in Magic and Disaster comes out in paperback this August.

If you're in Oakland this afternoon, you should absolutely stop by The Pergola at Lake Merritt for the book launch of The Hex, a story collection by Luna Merbruja.
"The stories follow 9 different protagonists whose lives are changed by a trans scientist who creates a new HRT that unlocks shapeshifting. A new world is born through chaos and magic."

Sony wants to relaunch its live-action movies starring Spider-Man's supporting cast. I explain how to do it without launching any more Kraven-sized disasters.
Plus bonus mini-rants about feminist splatterpunk and corporate consolidation!

Hailey Kaas is a travesti (transfeminine person) living in Brazil, where she has run for public office and launched a transfeminist community. Hailey is one of the people who comes to mind for me when I think of resilience and creativity.
Her mom has cancer and she's been struggling. Please help:
Hailey is an incredible person whose resilience and creativity keep blowing me away. She keeps making amazing culture and fighting for trans feminism in Brazil.
Her mom has cancer and it's taking up all her time and energy. Can you help her make rent please? <3
"A lot of people working on climate assume that as more people have direct experience with extreme weather events they will naturally be more supportive of climate policy. But ... when people are afraid and desperate ... those are the conditions in which conspiracy theories thrive."

My friend Hailey Kaas is a brilliant writer, translator, organizer and founder of Brazil's first transfeminism community. Her mom has cancer and she's having a tough time.
Want to know more? She just made an amazing video to help you get to know her better:
Q: Why do marshmallows, graham crackers and melted chocolate keep getting smaller and smaller over time?
A: Blame S'moore's Law
RE: @charliejane@wandering.shop
Hailey is my total hero. And she keeps perservering in spite of some really bad luck. She just had another emergency that cost her an extra $200 and meanwhile her mom's cancer care continues.
If you can spare a few bucks, I'd really appreciate it.
Fun fact: Charles Lindbergh was the first airplane pilot to fly at such high speeds that he aged backwards.
He became known as the Lindbergh Baby, and he toured the world in a flying stroller. His catchphrase was "ayyyy who needs a pacifier? I got a paciFLIER."
A lot of people are speculating that Anto Kreegyr is secretly a different Star Wars character using a fake name.
In other words, it could be an Anto Nym.
Every month I try to review books that I
A) enjoyed
B) want to geek out about
in my @washingtonpost@mstdn.social SFF review column.
But please believe me when I say that all five books I review this month are *extraordinary*. I felt so lucky to be able to review them.

We by Phillip B. Williams
The Butcher of the Forest by @premeesaurus@wandering.shop
The Fox Wife by Yangsze Choo

The Blueprint by Rae Giana Rashad
One day someone will say "It's cold in here" and I won't be immediately compelled to respond "There must be some clovers in the atmosphere"
Probably not any time soon tho
Read @davekarpf@mastodon.social's newsletter that talks about solar geoengineering today, and ooof. They really are gonna "torment nexus" that Neal Stephenson book. (is.gd/dFBJDg)
FYI I interviewed some scientists about solar geoengineering a while back and it was scary:

ICYMI Hailey is a brilliant activist, writer, translator and educator. She inspires me every day.
She's dealt with some huge challenges in the past and has gotten through them — but now her mom has cancer and she's the sole caretaker.
If you can kick in $5 or $10 I'd be so incredibly grateful.
