Long Shot: Does anyone in New England want to sell a reasonably (not eBay) priced #SGI workstation or #Amiga ?

I’ve wanted one for years for nostalgia + experimentation. Should’ve picked one up back when they were affordable, but life was too busy.

I’m a user/collector — not a reseller — if that makes a difference :)

(I live in Central #Maine)

Fellow Mastadonians, I have a question that I could use input on.

When everyone around me — my network, local businesses, employers, competition, etc… are all using LLMs

And “people” on social media are bragging about LLMs.

How do I, as a freelance developer, find good clients and projects? There’s no way I can compete with anyone pushing AI slop quickly and cheaply. But it seems that’s what people want to pay for.

@davefischer@hachyderm.io This is amazing! I would drive down for them but I can’t handle the flicker from CRTs anymore. The pizza box on the other hand 👌 Have been wanting to get my hands on any Sun & SGI workstation hardware for many years, with no luck. But it’s a good 3.5 hour drive from Maine. This is awesome of you to put out there!

@pheonix@hachyderm.io it’s so bad that posting on LinkedIn with your own authentic words sticks out better than the AI crap it’s getting spammed with. Aside: I wish I didn’t rely on LI so heavily for finding work/projects and staying in touch with past coworkers.

@derSammler@oldbytes.space Are you repairing them for others? Or a collector? Just curious if you have any pro tips on where to find them? (Besides eBay, which has extremely high prices)

@cazabon@mindly.social a4000 + video toaster is the dream 🥺 You’re very lucky to still have yours! But probably way out of my budget. I was thinking a few hundred. I haven’t seen a4000s that cheap in over 15 years, if ever. Especially bundled with a Toaster, haha.

@awb not Unix/linux specific, but I remember my dad using DBase 2 to create all kinds of cool things for both his job (he worked for some auto parts distribution company) but also even did fun things with scripting out ray casting and such. @thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io there’s also the issue with tech workers that our salaries can’t be written off in the tax year they were paid anymore … they have to be amortized. That doesn’t help our cause much either.

Everytime I see a good SGI or Amiga post I regret not buying back when they were affordable and more available.

Gathering wood from a friend for firewood. This is likely not a prime species (a mix of hemlock and something else, I believe) and there is a little rot on the outer inch of some logs. Will salvage what I can.

I really wish I had a dump trailer or dual axle trailer. A truck would also be great. And it looks like until I can afford a log splitter; I’ll be getting some exercise and working on my log splitting form.

Has anyone ever gotten a part time job in tech? I’d love to find one but no clue where to start; everyone wants full-time or more.

I’m looking for part-time #work if anyone sees any opportunities!

18 years SaaS/web-tangent Software Development + SRE/DevOps/Platform Engineering roles. Mostly Linux/Python/Kubernetes/etc… technical stack professionally.

Tons of interests personally, but not at a level I’d throw on a resume. I need to get my hands dirty and put some projects out there. Low level programming, microcontrollers/sensors, games, and just about anything fun.

Resume: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kurtismullins

Remote from #Maine

@mattblaze@federate.social have you found an inexpensive tripod that is great for travel or hiking photos by any chance? Something portable, well built, but not hundreds of dollars

@scalonnec@pouet.chapril.org Oh no, that’s so sad! Did they use a proprietary interface for their graphics cards and other boards? I hope someone out there has a spare they can part with so you have a complete machine.
