qubes os dev and ux lead

firm believer that human brains are a crucial attack surface and ux design is actually a security tool, too

this account is mostly for security and design related stuff, with occasional complaining

I would like to note that epipens have fucking abysmal #ux. Yesterday, I was handed one and tried to use it in panic (I did not know the person was allergic. There was no one for miles around. I have never used an epipen.) and I ended up sticking the needle in my thumb. Calling the ambulance with an epipen stuck in my finger: definitely an adventure.

(everyone is fine)

I'm mentoring a delightful intern during Google Summer of Code... and it looks like the issue she is working on will get the best kind of solution, which is: add three lines that fix the problem, remove a ton of lines that only made it more complicated. This is so lovely <3 (and makes me miss teaching people so much, those moments that the person you are working with makes a big leap on their own are the best).

RE: @glyph@mastodon.social

Computers are not a neutral tools you can just not use if they misbehave - especially nowadays, they for many people a fundamental tool of their work (which means survival), social interaction (which is a basic need), fulfilling societal obligations such as taxes or various other legal duties (also close to survival).... it's not consent if the alternative is losing your job, not getting to pay taxes, losing the ability to chat with friends.

Today we bought out our pharmacy's entire supply of those rescue blankets you can put on the window to block some heat (entire supply was one blanket, but the pharmacist was clearly extremely enthused about the idea, ask me to sketch him how to put it up and went to put in an order for more :D). I am genuinely terrified of the heatwave... it will be brutal.

@varx @briankrebs well, delusions are quite rarely logical (and often completely unfalsifiable). If the people suffering from them could logic themselves out of the fear and anxiety they are suffering, I'm pretty sure most of them would :(

Hey fediverse, I have a question about #rust ; I'm thinking about learning a bit more of it, but I would like to use it with Qt Widgets. Is it possible? Does it work well? Are there like big missing pieces that only work theoretically? Googling gives me a fairly inconsistent answers, everything between "it works perfectly" and "it's a nightmare". (Also yes I would like to know how Qt works, not about alternatives to Qt, most definitely not about Gtk)

@joshsutphin@wandering.shop what a lovely piece. I wish we-as-society normalized having companies that have as a goal "do a neat thing in a way that allows the people doing the thing to live normal, decent lives". Not accumulate more and more wealth, just: do a neat thing. Have a liveable wage.

@neuralex@neurodifferent.me I think your memory overestimates how reliable and bug-free things were. I was teaching people how to MS Office in the early 2000s, when most of them used the old 9x versions, and so much of my job was working around bugs and people's workaround for bugs. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of badness in modern UX (the thing I hate the most is making users stupider through oversimplification, so that people no longer understand what a file is), but it wasn't that great before.

@lcamtuf@infosec.exchange I think whoever made the stackoverflow module for python should get on it right now.

@TrimTab @thomasfuchs that's easy to say if your eyesight is good. But frankly, the ability to make letters on my e-reader bigger has been a real lifesaver for me - there are many books, especially reference books, that in print for are just nor really readable for me without literal headaches.

@TrimTab @thomasfuchs also DRM-free ebooks definitely exist? I bought a ton of those over the years and I feel pretty good about it. Yes, ebooks from amazon are shit due to DRM, but in many other ecosystems (like for example almost all online bookstores in my home country) you can just buy a DRM-free file.
