@johncarlosbaez@mathstodon.xyz I have fond memories from back in high school (1700's), when "Catastrophe Theory" was the bee's knees, and was going to explain everything unstable. I remember reading a Scientific American article on CT and thinking that it was very cool, but had that smell of a fast one being pulled somewhere. Turns out I was more or less spot on. Later in college, I encountered a paper where someone had taken the chemistry of some creature and created an arrow diagram of how every molecule was turned into other molecules. Then they made a big matrix and took eigenstates. Sudden jumps in behaviour occurred when the system switched from one eigenstate to another. A bit like you discussed, but I don't recall a storage mechanism like you discussed recently.

@johncarlosbaez The original argument (It's from the blog of some UCSD professor twenty years ago, and reached a different conclusion) does not take into account that all this virtual property takes energy to maintain, causing data centers to be an anathema upon the face of the Earth. The seemingly stupid Musk idea of putting data centers in orbit thus seems less stupid, although I doubt the total environmental cost of the rocket offsets the off-Earth savings. Another obvious solution is to maintain "our" 3% growth rate while destroying the growth rate of others. Once "we" are too large, split and repeat.

@AmenZwa I love the idea of fountain pens. However, you can always tell if I've use a soldering station recently because there are new burn holes all over; my brain just won't track the tip if I'm not actively thinking about it. If I've got a fountain pen in hand, I am rapidly drenched in ink. So, it's gel rollers for me.

My wife obtained this bracelet recently. It is NOT 'steampunk' fashion; this is the real deal from the 1880's. What would this style have been called? It pre-dates Art Nouveau and Art Deco.

@ShaulaEvans "江湖", but I can't translate it into English. The two characters are "rivers and lakes", but the meaning has nothing to do with water. It means a subculture of martial artists, street performers, and various ne'er do wells that probably never really existed. Most Chinese fantasy stories are based on it. It's always entertaining to see Chinese TV shows subtitled in English and see what they do with this word.

@joshg@mathstodon.xyz One could argue that until the AI reaches the age of majority (18 yo), the company that wrote the software acts in loco parentis. Also, until the AI is of age, it will have to comply with age verification laws in order to surf the web for training data. Child abuse laws could be interesting; what if Child Protective Services moves the AI to a foster home?

@johncarlosbaez There is a relatively simple argument that, in order to maintain a 3% growth rate forever, most economic value must become virtual. There just isn't enough stuff on the planet to hold such value. Consequently, the *relative* price of physical things goes to zero. We are seeing this now. How much of our household budget is spending on things virtual? Internet access, streaming, ebooks, games, bitcoin, NFTs (ha!), LLM access, apps, &c.

For any of you sad sacks of shite sorry enough to live in California or New Jersey, doing taxes, and have an HSA...

Pretty sure no HSA companies track capital gains and losses, since they are not needed for federal. Since the HSA company isn't choosing specific shares to sell, you have to cost average. So, tot up all the hard-earned petrodollars you spent buying whatever mutual fund you are using and the number of shares you have. That's your cost basis, which you need when you sell some shares. After selling, you have to subtract off the number of shares as well as subtract off the cost basis you just used from your running total for next time. Ditto buying more shares.

You've got six days to figure it out.

@dimpase @christianp @ColinTheMathmo The extra load I was referring to isn't on any specific Mastodon instance. Every time I post something, every server in the network hits my website (because my website is 'confirmed', I think?). So, if the number of Mastodon servers is M, number of global users is U, and average posts per user is P, then total global traffic is scaling as O(MUP). That's not sustainable. Those web accesses need to be 'torrented'. #mastodon

@mjd @ncf As someone who studies probability, it seems obvious that an experiment has a specific result, and so individual objects exist, and that one wants to compute chances for sets of those. Looks like a set theory. But as a probablist, I know ZFC is a non-starter, since it doesn't play well with measure theory, which is no more than assigning sane values of chance to sets. So, I am left with ¬(ZFC).

@Arpie4Math@mathstodon.xyz Nice write-up. So, here's the question: Axiom of Choice breaks measure theory. One then concludes that asserting every set has a well-defined measure (excluding 0 & ∞) implies...what? Does it mean that measure theory requires that mysterious border material? Does it mean that measure theory needs non-orderable sets? Is this an open problem? Measure theory + AC breaks when there is a group symmetry, so simple symbolic logic may not be sufficient. Or is that the clue - a group symmetry makes something non-orderable?
