@sbrl@fediscience.org's 2 laws of artificial intelligence:

1. AI will always hallucinatinate
2. AI will always be biased

AI is like a dictionary. It stores the important things in the training dataset in its memory. Then it matches against them when queried. Anything outside of what it learnt matches results in an inaccurate answer.

Data is generated by humans, who are inherently biased. We can't account for biases we don't know about.

What matters is not really AGI and media hype, but how we understand how models work, apply them appropriately, and continually work to understand and deal with bias as best we can - just like with irl.

I have hyprland on my lab pc (considering a switch to niri), and just had a situation in which I couldn't get gamepads to work no matter what I did.

Solution: make sure I had the `input` group so I had permission to access `/dev/input/*`...... * facepalms * 🤦‍♀️

Useful character: the unicode zero width space ''.

Ever wanted to @mention someone without pinging them, but felt awkward doing the space thing ala @ mention?

With the zero-width space assigned to your compose key, you have a solution at your fingertips :D

Because all the existing tools I could find were either badly documented or terrible to install, I wrote a little image deduplication tool that's actually sane and is:

1. Easy to install (hopefully)
2. Has actually decent documentation

https://www.npmjs.com/package/idedupebox

If it doesn't meet both of these criteria, that's a bug! get in touch.

If you find this useful, please also get in touch as it's great motivation :D

Solved sekrets management for my budding NixOS pi application cluster (kinda :P)!

In this case, it's transcrypt to the rescue: https://github.com/elasticdog/transcrypt

....I really should have initialised it in aes-256-ctr instead of the aes-256-cbc default tho.......

But yeah, transcrypt + git submodules = I can open source my NixOS config in the future!

@Krita@mastodon.art Nice, thanks for the reminder! I've set my CI system going to update my personal apt repository to repackage your AppImage \o/ (it's so much more convenient to update from one than downloading the new release every time on all devices) Link for anyone curious: https://apt.starbeamrainbowlabs.com/

Reminder system, component #381.6: https://starbeamrainbowlabs.com/msg.html

By writing a message and using the *send tab to device feature*, I can send myself little messages I know I'll see when I sit down at that target device.

It's also got a feature to help with furiganising 日本語のかんじ with ctrl + f ✨

`lnav` is a fab tool for analysing logs. Today I used it for debugging a verbose `strace -f` log file to analyse what the problem was w/smth and it was cool

Tip: hit `` to edit, enable, and disable existing text filters added w/e.g. `:filter-in` and `:filter-out`.

Convert a video file (e.g. from https://losslesscut.app/) to gif, downscaling & using only every 4th frame:
```bash
ffmpeg -i in.webm -vf "scale=384:216,setsar=1:1,select='not(mod(n,4))'" out.gif
```
- 384:216 → the new size `

Replying to on social.growyourown.services
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services I use @Tusky@mastodon.social which I don't *think* has the same issue? Though I haven't tried it. Either way, at first glance it sounds like a relatively easy fix - perhaps a good issue if you're a potential new contributor to open source looking for a place to start?
