π16 Our next featured creator is a baker. Describe a baked good you enjoy. I try not to eat baked goods often anymore because of my blood sugar, but probably the hardest to resist is a chocolate chip cookie, firm around the edges and chewy in the middle, with a balanced chip to cookie ratio. #ScribesAndMakers

∆ 25. Our featured creator does "a bit of educational activism on the side." Do you do any activism through your creative work? I often work issues that are meaningful to me into the story, but I don't think of it as activism. I think of my writing as more likely to connect with people who share my views than change minds, but I'd certainly be happy if someone changed their views because of something I wrote. #ScribesAndMakers

№ 29 Our next featured creator has done creative work with math(s). Does math(s) ever feature in any way in your creative work?

I have taken inspiration from Fermat's Last Theorem, but not the mathematical part of it. I can't think of anything else.

№ 4 How many songs are there where you know all the lyrics by heart? Honestly, not that many. Mostly songs that don't have many words. I usually know some but not all of the words to songs I like. #ScribesAndMakers

№ 3 When you see the word 'read', is your first instinct to read it as present tense or past tense? Present tense, for sure. I'm not the biggest fan of words I have to know the context before I know how to pronounce it. #ScribesAndMakers

∆ 19. Have you ever been to a poetry reading?

I think I went to a few in college, and many years ago I went to see Nikki Giovanni, but I don't think I've been to one since.

@kmherkes@wandering.shop I think you're not alone in disliking ghoti. I've seen a few comments to that effect today 😆 I was surprised to see how far back its use goes, though. I find it a fun word, but judging by reactions, it seems like it must come up a lot in irritating contexts or something.

@crcollins@writing.exchange @SJHoodlet@writing.exchange The only thing I remember having to memorize and recite was Jabberwocky, which was actually fun (even though I'm sure I did a poor job at it.) We did have to memorize all the presidents (I think it was up to Reagen at that point) and one fact about each of them, but I don't think we had to say anything out loud, just a written test.

@anderlandbooks words are funny that way. I often double-check even words I know very well before posting things because doubt creeps in and the word doesn't look right or I suddenly wonder if it means what I think it means. But yes, salvageable is definitely a word, and that is the correct spelling.

@grahamefleming@c.im I was looking at a display over the weekend showing all the things that killed more people in a year than sharks do, and it said vending machines kill 3 a year, which makes me wonder what people are doing with vending machines. On the one hand, I accept statistics and tend to believe reassurances that things are basically safe, but I also tend to like the 0% odds of being killed by a shark when I'm not in water where they are (along with my near zero odds of being killed in a plane crash if I don't get on a plane, though I can't discount the slim possibility one might crash into me. I suppose there are even slimmer odds that a shark might get me in a sharknado, but I think the wind would be the bigger threat there.)

@Nisaa@sfba.social interesting, I can't say this specifically for Duran Duran but I often go to lyrics websites looking for full words to songs I know part of and see something that doesn't match with what I was quite sure I knew very well. Since every site has the lyrics the same, I assume I must have been wrong, but now I wonder if at least on occasion the sites are the ones who have it wrong.

@WhatACharmingHouse@mastodon.social how did you come to be thinking of Shirley Jackson and Tom Waits at the same time? Now I'm starting to wonder what a conversation between the two would be like. He would have to still be pretty young for this fictitious conversation to happen in real life, but Tom Waits and the ghost of Shirley Jackson talking seems kind of interesting to me.
