I'm Rick O. I live in the #PNW. Professionally, I'm a security researcher with previous experience as a penetration tester. Most of my hobbies are related to computers and technology in some way. I like to break things or build things to help people break things. #Privacy is important to me.

I'm hoping to be part of an active community of other #hackers doing fun things because we can.

I also enjoy playing #guitar, good stories, #CrossFit, and being a #dad.

@unlofl @flipper @pluralistic I've always enjoyed the Penn and Teller bits where they reveal exactly how a trick is done and it's somehow just as incredible if not even moreso to see them perform complicated moves so smoothly.

@pluralistic@mamot.fr Pizza hut forced this new pizza delivery software system on its franchises to improve efficiency. it allowed doordash drivers to see when pizzas would exit the oven so they could time deliveries better. Of course the drivers used this knowledge to wait for more pizzas so they could batch the deliveries and likely make more money with less driving. This resulted in slower deliveries of cold pizza and this franchise owner claims $100 million in damages

@pluralistic@mamot.fr One more interesting piece of this is that PeaceHealth settled 5 days into the court case, but the judge wants to see this through. "(Judge) Kasubhai pressed attorneys and witnesses on whether Lane Emergency Physicians is truly an independent physicians group or if it was operated by ApolloMD. He went on to describe the setup as a “shell game.” " “I am going to need to see this to the end,” he said. “I am involved whether anyone likes it or not.” https://lookouteugene-springfield.com/story/health/2026/05/06/peacehealth-er-case-shows-that-oregons-new-medical-law-has-teeth/

@pluralistic@mamot.fr The whole story is a bit wild, involving the staff at the hospital voting overwhelmingly against hospital administrators with a vote of no confidence. https://lookouteugene-springfield.com/story/health/2026/02/24/hundreds-of-medical-staff-vote-no-confidence-in-riverbend-leadership/ One of those administrators was later put on administrative leave for allegedly making patient care decisions without the proper license in Oregon: https://lookouteugene-springfield.com/story/health/2026/04/09/top-peacehealth-riverbend-executive-put-on-administrative-leave/ Then it went to court thanks to the new law. Now it seems PeaceHealth has settled but there is still movement in the courts.

@ellesaurus it would be kind of cool if we could get a week's worth of work done in 3 days and have a 4 day weekend every week. But that's not how it works. It's never how it works :(

@JulianOliver@mastodon.social That was you! I actually covered your glasshole project on Hackaday back then when I used to write for them. I recall that post had a ton of engagement and discussion. I remember the project because I found it really interesting and also it had a funny and clever name. When I read about the meta glasses the other day I thought of your project and hoped someone would find a way to do what you are proposing. Glad to hear you are still fighting the good fight.

Excellent article here. Hits the nail on the head I think.

"But I don’t think most people are formulating a new worldview in which AI is a boogeyman political project hatched by billionaires. I think they’re more likely to understand AI as an extension of an already inequitable system, and as an accelerant of that inequality."

@liztai @cliffle the other essay I was referring to was by @Daojoan https://www.joanwestenberg.com/a-soft-landing-manual-for-the-second-gilded-age/ As for AI related layoffs, I have seen reports of this happening in the US but also research that suggests many of these companies are just blaming AI because it makes it look like a positive efficiency thing VS "we are hurting financially". So who knows?

@cliffle I would love to read more nuanced thoughts and opinions about AI. I don't think it's as black and white as a lot of public comments suggest.

@hdm@infosec.exchange I had to stop using postman when they started aggressively pushing everything into cloud accounts. Why can't my data just be mine?!

@liztai @cliffle I'm in the USA and must admit that I've only ever thought about AI in my own "context". Your essay made me realize that so thank you. I read another essay recently that discussed AI and how we only look at its effects based on our current environment. If in the US we had social safety nets like healthcare for all, UBI, etc, then worker displacement due to AI would not be as terrible. Instead it could even be good in that it would free up many people to start small businesses.

@liztai @cliffle There's no reason the parameters of the environment can't change. However the situation in the USA right now feels pretty grim and I don't have any hope of expanded social safety nets of any kind being implemented any time soon.

@liztai @cliffle I must admit I'm guilty of assuming folks I interact with online are in the same country as me unless there's an obvious clue that they live in another country. Not that I argue with folks online but I do have a tendency to make that assumption in general. Conversations like these help remind me that the world is a big place and I need to work on reminding myself.

@index just found your blog and loved this post.

Been wanting to build a cyberdeck for years but reading this has me thinking about them in a different way. Also fascinating the repeating cycle of automation VS labor. History doesn't repeat but it rhymes!

Was watching Good Will Hunting the other night. The first 30 seconds of this scene had me imagining Will Hunting as ChatGPT and Skylar just trying to actually learn something.

@asie@mk.asie.pl probably depends on why you are banning llm contributions. If it's because you can't keep up reviewing all the new code and you aren't reviewing upstream code anyway, then it wouldn't be related to the problem you are trying to solve in that case.
