I have mixed feelings on the Keukenhof flower show. The flowers are beautiful. The way they are produced is not: the flower trade (especially bulbs) is a huge source of environmental damage through pesticides.

I realize I'm in a place of privilege here: tenured and native English speaker makes all the difference. But the commodification of writing, the focus on the product rather than the process, it frustrates me to no end. Yes, it is endlessly faster to have genAI shorten a text. But it also means that you don’t have to sit and think about what the real essence of the project or paper is. What can be cut out of the text? What can’t because removing it shifts the focus too much?
A "two legged" academic does both education and research- but is it really possible to balance them? And are two legs enough?

My university has now moved from nudging on to policy for train travel: anything under 700 km is now in principle to be done by train rather than flying. This is a good thing.

Women in positions as full professors in the Netherlands still dismally low at 26,7%, and the shift is slowing down- this year just 1% more than last year.
At this rate it will take until 2041 until an equal gender distribution is reached. The yearly monitor by the Dutch Network of Women Professors (LNVH) is a discouraging read this year.
Seriously, NL academia. Do better.

Congratulations on starting the new job, this looks like a great place! Enjoy.
And many thanks agan for all of your efforts here. I hope that this instance stays around, but obviously understand if it can't. I'll stick around until curtain call 😉 and see if someone can take over before looking into migrating if that becomes neccesary.
