First lecture in a course that I have taken over and teach for the first time. A very large class, second-year students who are eager to learn and who are also anxious, as the course was taught very rigidly before.
I have discarded slides altogether and develop the material on the whiteboard, as I used to do. So liberating. 10-20 minutes for setting the scene, then I give them a mini case to work through with their neighbours. The students are wonderful. The room buzzes in eager discussions between them; they compare notes, check each others calculations, argue earnestly with each other. Live discovery of fundamental truths, in a shared space. The subject is alive and speaks to us. After the session I release my notes, which put all the micro insights together.
Real teaching, I and Thou, is possible. I am lucky to be a teacher and to have these students. Life is good.

Whilst it may be that some Universities in the UK have engineered their own problems here is a sobering quote from the OECD: “In Chile, only 47% of tertiary education expenditure comes from government sources, and in the United Kingdom, it is just 43%, the lowest across OECD and partner countries with data”.
https://www.oecd.org/en/publications/education-at-a-glance-2025_1c0d9c79-en/full-report/how-is-tertiary-education-financed_2845d742.html
(The US spends, for example, about four times as much public money relative to GDP as we do on Higher Education BTW, twice as much if you include R and D spend).
That’s a governmental choice, driving the whole show. Combined with the cap on home UG fees and an unfriendly visa regime this isn’t a sustainable model for students or providers.

Today, with a heavy heart, I am stepping back.
After losing my third chance to continue my education, and after months of searching for support with no real response, I no longer have the strength to keep chasing the same closed doors.
I also need to step away from humanitarian work for now.
I gave what I could to others, but I feel my own future disappearing in silence.

Editorial | The Guardian | The Guardian view on universities: public confidence in degrees is wavering – ministers should shore it up | Editorial by Editorial
AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information.
The article highlights a sharp decline in public confidence that a university degree is worth its cost, with the proportion of people holding that view rising from 14 % to 34 % over the past two decades, according to a new Institute for Fiscal Studies study that also confirms an average lifetime earnings premium of about £100,000 but notes that one‑quarter of graduates end up financially worse off and that this premium has fallen roughly 30 % since forecasts six years ago. While concerns about loan terms, low‑value courses and the risk of mis‑selling degrees—especially for men with low prior attainment—are prompting ministers to consider stricter grade requirements, the piece argues that a degree’s value extends beyond earnings, citing a recent Advance HE and HEPI survey in which 45 % of students said their course offered good value for money (the highest since 2013) and 66 % were satisfied with their choice, with only 7 % regretting university. The article warns that financial pressures on the sector should not deter low‑income or rural students from attending, emphasizing the broader social, civic and personal benefits of higher education even as policymakers seek to protect its reputation and accessibility.

“Florida seeks to strip public university professors—and by extension their students—of the ability to fully engage with ideas that are, for better or for worse, very popular in some academic circles,” said Judge Britt Grant, an appointee of President Donald Trump and author of the majority opinion. “The State asks us to consider its rules a means of targeting discrimination. But hearing an idea you disagree with is not discrimination; it is an opportunity to come up with a better idea, or maybe even change your mind.”

Al Jazeera – Breaking News, World News and Video from Al Jazeera | Turkiye shutters liberal Istanbul university seized in criminal probe
AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information.
Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan revoked the operating licence of Istanbul Bilgi University – a private institution known for its liberal values and home to about 20,000 students – effectively shutting it down in the middle of the academic year. The decree, published in the Official Gazette, cites a law allowing closure of schools deemed “insufficient” in education and training, and follows a state takeover last year after Bilgi’s parent company, Can Holdings, was implicated in a money‑laundering and tax‑fraud investigation. With the university now run by a court‑appointed administrator, the Council of Higher Education pledged “necessary measures” so students can sit their end‑of‑year exams and continue their studies at Mimar Sinan University; protests erupted on campus and the university, founded in 1996 and ranked 1,401 globally, participates in the Erasmus Mundus programme.

Irish Independent : Independent | Principals join chorus of voices accusing Irish universities of driving up CAO points
AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information.
School principals, represented by the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals (NAPD), have joined other education voices in accusing Irish universities of deliberately inflating CAO points to boost their prestige, a practice they say harms students and distorts the admissions system. The association is urging an urgent overhaul of the points system to protect learners.

The Guardian | I knew my writing students were using AI. Their confessions led to a powerful teaching moment | Micah Nathan by Micah Nathan
AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information.
In his MIT fiction‑writing workshop, Micah Nathan discovered that students were using AI to produce polished yet soulless stories, which sparked a powerful teaching moment about the essential struggle of translating thought into words. He argues that AI‑generated prose, while flawless on the surface, eliminates the friction that cultivates both creative growth and cognitive endurance, weakening writers’ skills and undermining the peer‑review dynamic that relies on authentic authorial voices. Citing historical anxieties about new technologies and recent studies linking AI‑assisted writing to reduced neural connectivity and persistence, Nathan now enforces a clear policy against AI‑written submissions, positioning the workshop as a sanctuary for genuine authorship where the messy process of drafting, revising, and grappling with language is valued over effortless, machine‑produced text.

I’m glad to share my paper on publication activity and migration trends of Ukrainian SSH scholars during the first two years of the full-scale war.

The key finding: the most productive researchers have largely remained in #Ukraine and many have maintained or even increased their publication activity, despite the challenges.

Watching #TheMission (1986) in light of the current AI crisis in #HigherEducation.
The other day I happened to re-watch this 1986 #film by #RolandJoffé. I had last seen it 40 years ago when it came out. It has aged quite well. The depiction of the indigeneous #Guaraní people is embarrassingly superficial. And the idea that the Jesuit order was a benevolent force is of course laughable. But as a story of an institution that willingly sacrifices its purpose and moral integrity in a power game, the film works.
I can't help drawing parallels to the current AI corruption of higher education.
In Cardinal Altamirano (played by the excellent #RayMcAnally), we see the manager who knows that his action destroys the very rationale of his institution, yet he does it. The two priests (Jeremy Irons and Robert de Niro) are the ground-level staff who stay true to their calling and fight, in different ways. They vanish. Years later, the manager has the luxury of regret.
