It’s now been a full week of #AkademieNL so here’s a little update:

Since it’s launch we’ve had 232 people sign up for the server and 1930 messages being posted! 📈

So that means for the entire first week every 43 minutes someone registered to the server and every 5,2 minutes a message was posted. Pretty impressive if you ask me.

Also the response from everyone and the trust has been heartwarming!
We’re working on some improvements behind the scenes, hopefully more on that soon.

I still think Mastodon can be an awesome, community driven alternative, but I no longer think I am the right person to make that happen for Dutch academia. So, if you are active on AkademieNL, have some spare time on your hands and don’t mind to crowdfund for the server every half year or so, please reach out to me through a DM here. We can easily transfer the server to you and it doesn’t require that much extra time. If you have any questions about it, feel free to reach out as well.

The only thing that's left for me to do (and no worries I will stick around here) is to thank all of you who have participated in this adventure. Never thought I would receive so many heartwarming messages and support when starting this server. It has truly been a wonderful experience, but Chris can offer the energy, vision and experience that is needed to continue AkedemieNL's adventure that I unfortunately cannot at this moment. 5/n Safe Haven: The server rules state #AkademieNL is meant as a safe haven for academics. A certain opinion piece recently stirred up discussions on safety within academia. Let me state publicly and clearly here: anyone crossing lines of harassment of others will get deleted from the server. There is no place for such behaviour on here, ever. If the harasser is on another server I will reach out to their admin to take appropriate measures, and never hesitate to reach out to me as well.

If I counted correctly that makes us the 22nd biggest instance on the planet / fediverse. I am truly humbled by this, all the kind words I received and academics that choose to be here. 3/n Finances: I wanted to wait a bit with the crowdfunding part of running this server, but @SiccodeKnecht@akademienl.social insisted on having to pay the 8 dollar amount that the birdsite is asking for a blue tick. Could have never imagined that it gained traction so easily and the Tikkie amassed almost 200 euro's! Thanks to everyone that donated, truly I am so humbled by the support.

So the how and why: The servers are run by an external hosting company and unfortunately that’s not free. Last time I announced we yielded enough to keep us going for 6 more months (see: https://akademienl.social/@RHoogstraat/110854377139359311) unless we would grow exponentially. We didn’t grow exponentially, but I did have to upgrade our package which means it costs more. That’s why now, 6 months later I am once again asking for your support.

There’s a couple of reasons for this: as some of you might know I am starting a new job soon (https://www.linkedin.com/posts/robberthoogstraat_per-01-02-2024-zal-ik-de-overstap-maken-naar-activity-7138132107783999489-Px81) This will obviously require extra attention and energy from me in the coming months. On top of that the fragmentation from Twitter into Mastodon, Bluesky, Threads, and so on, has led to me spending way less time on any of these platforms. This all means that I cannot offer the time and energy anymore that this server requires to thrive.

As for the future: the sad news is that I want to look into someone taking over the server. If I cannot find someone that’s willing to do so I will have to shut down AkademieNL with a 2 month notice in advance (as per Mastodon policy).

4/n Finances 2: I will stop sending out the Tikkie now. For full transparency: depending on how the activity will develop (i.e. how many users will sign up) this amount will already ensure two to five more months of #AkademieNL. As the server stands now that number will be five, but it we grow fast in the coming months, that might become less. It's still in the works to ensure more stable funding, which I think will surely happen within the time the Tikkie supplies us with.

@spdrnl@sigmoid.social They do. Last time I already asked people to consider migrating to their server. Some (institutional) accounts choose to do so, but overal traffic only increased.

If no one wants to take over and I choose to shut it down, I will do so with a strong recommendation for people to migrate to the SURF-server.
