Conscription - compulsory military service by the Government - during war on Vietnam era regime in 1960s and early 1970s was for 19+ years old. It was unpopular and new government changed voting age, ended compulsory military conscription and Australian participation in USA war on Vietnam

The voting age was lowered from 21 to 18 in Australia in 1973.
The post-war arguments for lowering the voting age from 21 to 18 centred on the equity of 18 year olds being
old enough to fight and die but not vote.
This argument gained traction internationally in the 1960s with the rise of civil rights and the mass youth casualties of the War on Vietnam by USA and allies ie Australia.
