Currently working on accessibility at Google Search. Views here are my own. Views through my eyes are only peripheral, as I have no central vision.

I advocate for public transportation and a built environment that's accessible to disabled people and moves us away from reliance on cars. I've spent most of my life in the bay area.

Interests include jazz, other music, trains, cycling, photography, cooking, and Minecraft.

The last thing I heard before I had to quit and relaunch VoiceOver on the Mac for the nth time today: “empty null”.

MacOS is so much better to me than Windows in so many ways, so I can't stomach switching to get a better screen reader, but VoiceOver tests my patience more than anything else in my life.

If you share a video of a screen reader doing something, include the audio of the screen reader speaking. Do not just have a silent video with the speech captions shown. Otherwise, you’re preventing the very people who use screen readers from perceiving the video. 🤦 Mentioning this because I encountered this for probably the thousandth time today. #a11y

Apple covered the frosted glass stairs in the Union Square store with dark grey carpet and black rubber. What if these materials were to be installed on the software?

Because I can’t see things in the distance, when I’m out taking photos, I often have no idea what I’ve captured until I can look at the photos on a big screen.

I enjoy this photo from March when I checked out the newly-built OC Streetcar route. It shows how the new tracks undulate up onto this new bridge over the Santa Ana River, while the old bridge left over from the Pacific Electric West Santa Ana Branch is still there and is more correctly aligned with the right of way.

@pixelate@tweesecake.social Not having to do hours and hours of research into distros and packages and shell commands to get things minimally working. Like, someone just tell me what to install and have it not involve 50 steps. Also a comprehensive guide/tutorials about how to do basic stuff with keyboard navigation and Orca, like navigating around parts of the OS and common GUI programs.

@prism@infosec.exchange If I understand correctly, that’s only in the United States, and iOS throws up a scare screen, before redirecting you to your default browser app. So, there is still no way to do a transaction in the app without using in-app purchase. If someone is already using the mobile site, why bother redirecting them to the app where Apple’s terms are disadvantageous?

Why in the world does Patreon’s mobile site block me with modal dialogs trying to get me to use their iOS app, when Apple takes a cut of transactions initiated in the app? The main reason I don’t use the app is because last I checked, it was atrociously inaccessible with VoiceOver. The mobile site isn’t great either, but it’s somewhat usable.

@BrentToderian Can I ask why you still haven’t added an image description? Right now, for blind and low vision people using a screen reader, all we know is that there’s an image and we don’t know if it conveys additional information.

As of today, I again have not ridden the entire LA Metro Rail system because the D line was extended. Unfortunately this extension is a subway with massively overbuilt, mezzanine-encumbered stations. @pesh@mastodon.social

@SteveFaulkner@mastodon.social Hey Steve, I was just poking around on LinkedIn (probably inadvisable), and happened across your page, and noticed that the URL to your website has a typo, and therefore doesn't work.

I've been really enjoying the fireside chats, by the way.

All the lights turn off.

“Siri, which home accessories didn’t respond?”
“All your accessories responded.”

I'm excited that I've been selected to serve on the MTC-ABAG Community Advisory Council, representing disabled people.

MTC (Metropolitan Transportation Commission) and ABAG (Association of Bay Area Governments) make decisions about housing and transportation across the 9 counties of the San Francisco bay area.

It seems to me that if a company wants to provide a transportation service to the public, it should be accessible to wheelchair rriders.

@meganL@mas.to I’ve been thinking about this sort of thing for a couple years. Videos take a lot of time to put together, but my first attempt is this page I wrote about Caltrain, since it’s the most proximate to me. I want to do the same for BART and MUNI Metro, but I’m still trying to figure out what info and format is most useful to people. Kinda looking for feedback but haven’t asked around for that yet. https://peter.bike/caltrain_stations/

@dadederk Hey Daniel - I’ve tried it out a little, with some PDFs, but haven’t had time to really give it a thorough go, or try Daisy, yet. Two suggestions so far: I’d like to have more, and more granular, speed control. I’m using Samantha (compact) english, and 1.75x is still too slow for me. I’d also like more granular skip increments, and in particular, sentence and paragraph granularity. In Voice Dream, I often switch between those and skip by those amounts, without ever going to settings.

@dadederk Great! Personally I’m only interested in text Daisy. Many of us who download books from Bookshare get them in that format. I’m looking forward to trying it out. Congratulations and good luck on the launch!

@dadederk I’ve been wanting a replacement/alternative/vackup for Voice Dream, but haven’t found anything I like. I’m excited to try this out. Any chance it will ingest Daisy files, with chapters shown?

Yet another reason not to update to macOS #Tahoe: Apple removed the ability to open multiple tabs in the Maps app. I use that all the time.

@TheOverheadWire@sfba.social the story about drivers in Philadelphia being paid for speed bumps damaging their cars got me. I wish wheelchair riders could get paid whenever they have to roll over a bump in the sidewalk. Philly has a lot of bad ones. CC @Aubrie@verse.aubrielee.com, who actually just had her chair damaged rolling up the ramp to Golden Gate Ferry.

@BorrisInABox@fwoof.space I’m only a few millimeters from buying a Move, mostly because of you. I think I’d need some tutorial or instructions though, especially for using the screen reader output thing, and I’m not even talking about Move Everything. How/where should I learn stuff?

@jscholes@dragonscave.space It is quite odd, and I find it unusable. I think of it as such a missed opportunity to provide an accessible way of accessing news, amid the landscape of bloated, hard-to-use news websites. Also, I think the macOS System Settings app suffers from the same problem with its headings.

@organicmaps@fosstodon.org Why don’t I use Organic Maps? Support for VoiceOver in the iOS app is not great. Lots of badly-labeled and inaccessible elements. More people might use your app if they can use it. I’m not trying to be critical, it’s just the way it is. This is some friendly encouragement to improve.

@prism@infosec.exchange Once in my first year of college, I had a professor who, while introducing himself and telling us about his background, prefaced something by saying, “don’t laugh at this,” and then said he had 10 siblings. I laughed, because I didn’t understand why he expected people to find that funny. He seemed annoyed that I laughed, but I wouldn’t have if he hadn’t said don’t laugh. Still not sure whether to feel bad about it.

@overcastfm@mastodon.social The big thing I’m missing after the rewrite is that one-tap play doesn’t work when VoiceOver is on (or after VoiceOver has been turned on, then off, until the app is relaunched). Related, all the things in the menu you get when activating an episode should be available as accessibility actions. Other VoiceOver users have been saying these things too.
